Hey guys I just retrofitted the undercarriage spare tire holder on my 80 with factory tailgate-mounted spare. I installed new wheels and tires (set of 5) so I decided I might as well use the original spare and mount it underneath. Anybody know where this part goes and what it’s purpose is?

By the way, the extra weight of a second spare helped reduce the stinkbug, and the ride is better too!

Well, we don't see that on North American spec 80s. Not sure but is that perhaps a way to "lock" the spare to discourage theft? Sure, it's not actually a lock, but it would keep the lazy thieves at bay - the ones who think they can just crank it down and roll it away without crawling underneath to remove it first.

When I had that wheel mount the wheel would lower itself over time. That would have prevented it from happening.

Interesting on that. Mine's never started lowering on its own, but it's got a "special coating" of rust that prevents such shenanigans.

There's an exposed electrical connector in pic 2 that might need to be covered with tape or reconnected.

I just took out the original factory-fitted under-body spare wheel carrier from my 80 as it's totally impractical. Plus I now have an Aussie-made Outback Accessories rear bar and twin carrier installed.

With the factory carrier there was no really long bolt thing so I'm unsure what that's for but the part description says it's a spare shaft for the winch.

Only six M8 bolts (three for each end) bolting the carrier assembly to the inside of the chassis rails. Nothing 'locks' the spare in place when it's pulled up against the crossmember of the carrier by the chain winch. Also there is another part (51934A in the diagram shown) which the wheel pushes up onto when it's secured. You'll need that otherwise the rear-most bit of the tyre rubs up on the body.

This is the wheel carrier assembly itself for those who have never seen one:

I think they're standard fitment on all Australian-market 80's. Accessing the winch with the factory jack handle setup is a real PITA as there's no way to see it due to how the spare wheel blocks basically all light from reaching the space under the body.

To me the part looks like some sort of guide that goes through one of the wheel stud holes, but the carrier itself doesn’t have any holes that line up. It also doesn’t look like a spare shaft for the winch. I didn’t get the 51934A but I did get the 51933A which I just found out is also absent on the US spec. I also have an ARB rear bar and I think it makes the winch easier to access

Jumping in on this cold thread. I just bout a 1996 80 series and mine had this. It looks like an anti-theft device for the spare wheel. The shaft blocks the little hole in the bumper that you insert the jack handle into to access the lowering mechanism. Looking at your nice shiny new parts, to remove the shaft you need to unscrew it from the top which is inside the tailgate, and part of the chrome trim that holds the carpet down. The top is 'blocked' a T20 Torx bolt.

So, it looks like:
1. Open the tailgate
2. T20 tork to remove the top bolt protecting the 5mm (?) flat sided shaft 'bolt'
3. Unscrew the shaft upward with a 5mm spanner/tool
4. remove the shaft to allow access to the lowering mechanism

I haven't done mine yet, hopefully it's not rusted to balls :S

UPDATE: I went out to play with it (and give the car a power wash in that area) and my four points written above are incorrect. It's much simpler:

1. Open the tailgate
2. Use the 12mm spanner (in the pouch kit) to unscrew the square bolt/T20 Torx assembly (no need to unscrew the Torx bolt itself)
3. Unscrew the assembly until the shaft has cleared the jack hole!

Pics below show:
1. Unscrewing assembly
2. Unobstructed jack hole from below
