Yo MUD,

Building a skid for my GX, wondering how much the kdss bar moves durring suspension travel?

When I build Tacoma skids I remove the piece that connects the front frame rail with the first crossmember. The one on the GX, looks like it might have more purpose? (See image below)

Anyone know if I can remove them on the GX? Gain some more approach angle and a smidge of clearance…

The new skid will be 3-16 steel and have reinforcement gussets, especially in the front where the under kdss pieces are. I imagine my skid to be stronger than the pieces that are there, so any strength lost would be compensated for?

Anyway, looking to see if anyone has an idea of there function and or knows how far the kdss away bar moves, so I can build a skid that clears.

Do you mean your skids will be 3/16" sheet steel or 316 stainless steel? 3/16" steel would be pretty robust (and heavy)! Probably for more serious rock crawlers.

3/16” mild steel A36. Robust but needed, on my Tacoma I had both 3/16” steel and 1/4” aluminum at different points, bent them both. The GX is heavier to boot!

RCI's skids are 3/16" in steel. Most commercial skids have a notch for the KDSS bar, and there are reports on threads here of the KDSS bar hitting the commercial skids when using KDSS spacer blocks. So I don't think you could go much higher than the OEM clearances. I can measure the gap on mine with RCI skids when I get home tonight.

I ran without that bracket for about a year. My RCI skid plate bolts to it, and it got supersmashed. I ran a spacer until I received a free pair of brackets.

Did the brackets get smashed from off roading with the skid attached? The top of one of my brackets is smashed from the ARB skid pushing up on it, we’ll from hitting a rock that pushed the skid up.

Yes with the RCI skid attached, It was smashed like that but a little worse.

Keep an eye on that coolant leak 👀

Yeah I noticed that, here is a better image. Anyone have an idea on what this part is? Seems to where it’s collecting the drops but maybe leaking upstream but I haven’t investigated. When I have it up on blocks next weekend for the new lift I’ll pock around.
