In the garage.
Just got to realizing that the blower fan under the hood on my 83' FJ60 is not the blower motor for the heat system. (I know I'm a retard for thinking the heater blower would be on the L.F. fender in the first place). But can someone help me understand this. The service manual points it out as "under hood blower fan" in an under hood diagram, then it is never mentioned again. This is the blower motor with a snout on it that is located on the L.F. inner fender & points towards the carb/intake. WHY!?!? Thanks.

are you talking about the carb fan?

Must be. The diagram calls it "under hood blower fan" It does point towards the carb. What's it for.? How does it come on?

It comes on after you shut off the truck. Runs for ~ 15 mins. Function is to prevent overheating under the hood, which would lead to vapor lock, hard restarting, etc.

It's better if it works.

Cool.! (no pun intended) I will have to check it out & see if I can get it working. I know it doesn't work now. Thanks for the input.

It sucks in air from the outside via the vent on the outside fender(The chrome thing) and blows onto the carb to prevent vapor lock.

If yours isn't coming on, there are a couple of threads in here explaining why it probably isn't working(broken wire to the sensor)and how to fix it. Try using the "search" feature and look for "Carb Fan" under "60-Series Wagons".

Good luck!

Edit: I was bored....I went and found it for you...

If it is not working, check the sensor wire under the manifold. Chances are it is toast from the heat in that area.

I just reinstalled mine- my sensor is gone due to desmog -what wire do I ground to the fender? I plugged it back into the harness.

Is it this blueish one on the plug? Where should I cut? before plug or after? So would Ijust ground from fan to fender? sorry for all the questions, Iam hoping this fixes my hard hot starts.

here is the plug

It is not any of these I am pretty sure. These are towards the front of the truck

This is for headlight washers I think-

its the wire that goes up to the same connector that feeds the fuel solonoid. I forogot which one but there are some threads on that. I just grounded mine. What happens is that the fan comes on every time you shut the truck off no matter the temp, which was fine with me since before I did hte engine swap I noticed the temp sensor wire was pretty much melted and toast. ITs a crappy design where that ensor is..... no way will a wire live through exposure to the heat in that area.

I have searched at length but the photos are no longer there. Does the wire come off the firewall or the harness that runs along the fender? If anyone who has the fan grounded please take a pic for reference i would really appreciate it- I dont want to cut the wrong wire.

Are you talking about the wire that ran to the sensor?
If that is the case look in that group of wires that are in the clip on the master cylinder..
If not i'll look on mine out in the garage and take a pic tomorrow if I know what you are looking for.

It's one of the charbroiled connector ends I am talking about..

I'll look on my truck to see if I can find the wire.... I have my ECM and other stuff on the LH fender well now that I have a 5.7. Let me see if I can find it, I had it grounded to one of the brackets on the left hand fender well that's not longer there.

I think its this green wire that should be grounded. See where I had a "but" connector and have tied it out of the way due to my engine swap.

As I recall this green connector is the one that feeds the fuel solnoid too..... hard to see in the pic but wire on the other end of the but connector is cut...I'm fairly sure this is the one to ground, as I only made a few mods to the wiring.

guess I need to add that when I did this (ground the green wire) I also cut the wire that feeds to the carb fan temp sensor on the manifold, as it was a mess anyway.

I worked on mine today. that bluish wire was toasted. I grounded once and the fan started. after I hooked the wire to a permanent ground I didn't work. What went wrong?

When my truck was desmogged I think that my mechanic took all of the wiring for sensor out- there is a bit of yellow wire in the firewall. I need to call him and see what is left. thanks for the pics.

Guys ...you better check out my notes.... I do recall also grounding the fuel solnoid...so I may have mixed up my wires in the above.... Sorry about that....double check what I've posted.

maybe I'm having a flashback...but is the solution to just ground the wire that feeds the temp sensor on the exhaust manifold? Cut the wire that feeds the carb fan temp sensor.... ground that and I think your fan will come on every time the truck is shut off and run for some predetermined time?

One of the guys with an I-6 is better equipped to answer this now, since my I-6 took a vacation.

it would be great if we could get a picture of exactly what to do. I have noticed that my fan is not working either. PO desmogged it as well. I asked him what that fan did (i knew) and he said it was for smog. I was trying to get a feel for his know-how. I have found so many things wrong I don't know where to start. Thanks

Mine has been de-smogged as well. Has so many wires & plugs that don't go anywhere. I will try to get mine going & tell you what I did. May take a while.
