hawkvittles.. I would eat that sh** when I wasn't backpacking if it weren't so packed with calories.

Roughly 6$ a meal I wouldn't call expensive.

packitgourmet/ I have heard is good too.

If you want cheap get some spam, tuna in pouches, ramen ect.
or get a dehydrator and make it yourself

Also if you really want ultra light send all that stuff back and get
this

I also noticed that our local Costco's had Bug out Buckets filled with freeze dried meals for around $60.

I've already made my own alcohol stove and "fosters" pot.

They are okay but I want to use the kit describe. Thanks for the suggestion though.

ramen, quick cooking oatmeal, the Far East brands of quick cooking grains like tabuli and cous cous, peanut butter, coconut, thai curry, the tuna in foil packs, dried fish you can find at asian markets misc spices...you can mix and match, light weight, carb and protein packed, have fun.

The wife and I are prepping for a 3 day expo on back roads with some other Olde North State Cruisers folks. She's excited because she loves to camp and digs the minimalist thing (I'd prefer to tow a pig cooker). We got a couple of stove from Minibulldesigns and I'm amazed at how quickly they'll boil water. We're going through the grocery store dry stuff this week to see what we like. I know we'll be in the truck and not backpacking but I'm posting this here because she really wants to go ultralight so that's the angle we're taking on gear. Mmmmmhhh, precious ounces.

So far Idahoan Butter & Herb potatoes, Knorr noodles (flavor unknown), Ramen Miso flavored and Starkist tuna packets (on sale!) are winners.

Thanks to all here who have posted and given ideas.

MREs. Awesome nutrition and filling, too. Compact and lightweight. There is no substitute.

I ended up not cooking much on my trip, people kept insisting I eat stuff they had.:grinpimp:

Here is what I brought;

Tuna in the foil pouch with a couple of mayo packets from the local deli shop and a tube of crackers. This was lunch one day. I wish I had a packet of relish but :meh:.

Kippered herring with crackers, another lunch.

Knorr Swiss Alfredo noodles and a foil pouch of chicken, all white meat. I didn't use this but my wife and I have made it camping and it is a great easy to fix meal.

For breakfast I had instant plain oatmeal and tea, pretty much the same as home. Also a box of milk, the box milk is pretty good and needs no refrigeration. I wish I had packed some raisins for the oatmeal, it was very bland.

Just found an app called "gram weenie". Best one by far for entering your gear weight. It allows you to enter the weight of ALL of your gear. When you are ready for a trip just add the trip, nickname it, and add the gear you are taking on the trip. Very cool and easy to use. Btw... You can add in ounces or grams, whatever you prefer.
