Exactly, lights start coming on at random and everything starts to shut down from low voltage. Change the brushes($20) and it will charge again. You can test with multimeter at pos terminal of alternator to see if your getting 13+ volts. If it reads 12v or lower, then most likely its the brushes that need to be replaced. You can change them while the alternator is in place if you have small enough hands to get to the small phillips head screws on the cover. If you need to change the belt anyway, then it might be easier to remove alternator first. Remember to unbolt the power steering res to move it out of the way to get the alt out. Don't forget to loosen the lock nut first before you turn the long adjusting bolt to release tension on the belt. They'll probably load test your battery and test your alternator to be safe (or to just sell you stuff!). @sogafarm could be suggesting that this is the beginning of the "Xmas Tree" of lights on the dash when an alternator is crapping the bed. I'd suspect to see more lights than that but I'm not familiar with anything before my '94 80. Good luck.
Yes. A $12 screw is the cost for that mistake.Don't forget to loosen the lock nut first before you turn the long adjusting bolt to release tension on the belt.
