Finally got all of my parts in the right places, DUI installed, I'm may have to move it back a tooth. It ran really rough, although I had the fuel line in a gas can and no coolant hoses or coolant. I have all connections made and coolant dumped in (mostly almost 2.5 gallons worth).

Anyone have any experience with DUI installs as far as rotor alignment and degrees advanced or retarted? I aligned the rotor according to the FSM for the stock distributor. MAN what a close fit.

I had to move the passenger hard line for the heater. Not much room especially with PO extra battery tray. PITA!

Good question, I have no idea!! Is there a way to tell?

As an experienced DUI gear replacer... if it disintegrates, it's the old one. Depending on who you bought it from, you can likely get a replacement gear in the mail for free if you happen to be one of the lucky ones. Or, if you're really brave, take the old gear of your previous dizzy, drill it to match the new dizzy and put on the old gear for guaranteed fit.

Can you tell I've been there before?

You all have me worried now, How long has this "new gear" been around? I bought this truck as a rolling basket case and this dist. was in a box of parts. I have no idea about where it came from and how old it is.

How long should I be able to run this gear before I have any problems? Does it wear slowly or just fy apart at will.

Dui Hei

I bought my DUI directly from PerformanceDistributors.com about 3 or 4 years ago. I followed their instructions (TDC #1 install the rotor at this position) and it was a very easy install. I removed the coolant tube mounted to the side cover and ran High-Temperature Silicone Rubber Heater Hose (McMaster-Carr p/n 5133K14) the entire length. I secured the hose to the side cover mounting studs with Rubber-Cushioned Stainless Steel Loop Straps (McMaster-Carr p/n 3225T67). I used this silicone hose to replace all of the 5/8" id hose because I did not want to ever replace them again. I've never had any issues with their distributor - gear or otherwise.
I talked with Performance Distributors and they said there has never been any issues with the drive gear on their FJ40 units cracking. They do talk about distributor gear wear caused by the distributor being "bottomed" out on the oil pump. If you bottom out your distributor on the oil pump shaft you are going to have issues down the road. You might want to go to their web page and check out the tech page.

Are those the wires that came with it? NICE!!!
I'm confused about the rotor postion you mentioned at TDC, pointing to #1 cyclinder? What did you set you timing at?

Live wires

The wires were optional and yes they are sweet looking and highly functional. I did not go into detail about the setup. If you are curious, and I do not know where the installation book is in the pile of papers in my den, I would look them up on the internet and give them a call. They will send you the instructions or tell you over the phone or even email them to you. I think you can get a good idea of the final location as far as rotational orientation from the photo. I'm running the factory advance setting (the ball bearing pressed into the flywheel).

if you want to know if you have the old style gear or not you should call performance dist. all dui's have an engraved serial # on the bottom of the upper housing. they should be able to tell you if it is the old one or not.

also you want to install your dist. with your motor at top dead center if it is running bad you probably have it 180 out or off of top dead center.

I have noticed the number ingraved on the bottom. I will give them a shout and check it out this week.
