Hey - I’m getting ready to refresh my u joints and had questions for more experienced people, which is literally anybody reading this...
I have a JDM 1991 70 series. Pzj77. Reading posts and looking at you tube seems like a lot of crossover in the process and some what in parts.
I ordered 2 stock oem Toyota u joints and then thought I should do all 4. So I Ordered 2 more off amazon. Febest. Any comments on brands, and Toyota vs off brands?
was watching some generic utube videos for Tacoma etc. anything specific about 70 series process I should know?
Any comments appreciated, since 99% of my car tech is old Volkswagen and you know... no ujoints!
Thanks

Why are you replacing them?

And what part did you order?

Skip Febest joints imo. While they make some good parts, they have some I wouldn’t run and their China/India unjoints are one. Consider the Matsuba Japanese joints we offer @ Cruiser Outfitters. On part with OE Toyota imo at a much lower cost. Super vetted, we’ve sold thousands over the last 20+ years. We have the 7x variants in stock!

You should be using a smaller joint on the front, large “4 speed” joint on the rear. Imo, the small cost difference between a suspect joint and a great joint are trumped by the labor/cost to install/balance.

@TOPacifica I doubt there is not a single one among us that would not recommend Kurt and Cruiser outfitters. Great company, and should be a first call when you need parts.

I have 2 Toyota 04371-60070 which is 29 x 49 and then a couple generic “febest” same spec

Definitely will be looking there first going forward.

any specific comment about doing this on a 70 series? Or is it pretty straightforward?

Thanks! Will be looking to cruiser outfitters for sure going forward... and likely putting those febest aside and ordering replacements from you

Just replaced all on my 75 series, pretty easy to do. @tornadoalleycruiser taught me to cut the old one out. Cut two ajoining "legs" of the old joint with a angle grinder cutting blade. Makes it easy to pop out then. To be clear, I don't push the bearing caps through, I like to push each cap back out from where it came. seems like there is a little taper on them, so don't like pushing them through.

I use this tool to do mine.

Would the Toyota 04371-60070 stock ujoint be larger or smaller. If I can find out I can order the complimentary 2 from cruiser outfitter to complete the set.

Those are the small (front) equivalent to our UJ35031, the rear is the UJ36030.

thank you kurt and @2fpower . ordered the UJ36030 from you all, and the service kit from online. Start work next week and see how it goes. Not sure how difficult the bolts are but after struggling last week breaking bolts while doing brake work on my '91 Vanagon, i'm upgrading my impact wrenches too. Tired of jumping up and down on breaker bars as a way of getting excercise...
