:D Hi Everyone,

ill start off by apologising if this has been covered before, i did look but im not the best at searching.

anyways, i have a 1986 Hilux 4x4 single cab, live axel front and rear with leaf springs all round, disk front, drum rear. im in australia so im not sure what the deal with the mini or tacomas are:confused:

what my problem is, i have 33*12.5*R15 Muddies on my hilux with a 2 inch lift (i think, it was done when i bought it) its awsome off road but when the front axle is flexing and im turning the tyres get shredded on the front guards. the scraping occurs at the bottom of the guard, from the floor pan level to about 2 inched up, on the door side of the guard. but the rest of the guard is fine!

i know lifting the body or a suspension lift is the traditional fix however i do a lot of offroading along severely angled tracks and dont want to raise my center of gravity any higher. any ideas?
ive concidered 2 options:

1: take a nibbler and angle grinder and start hacking at the guards untill theres enough room, but im not sure if anything is behind the innner wheel arch

2: remove the quater pannel all-together and bodge up a guard from a fj40

has anyone done anything similar? im not shy about hacking my car up, but i dont want to do anything structural, i'm no pro fabricator, just a bodge job fixer. if its relevant i have a holden 253ci v8 and toyota dyna truck gearbox in there too im not sure if that effects anything though, appart from weight:D

thanks again guys&girls

Suspension wont do anything to fix your problem, unless the Leaf pack is thicker than what was replaced.

I've got Interco LTB 31x11.5 15 on 3.5" Backspace 15x8's and they have bent and torn the Plastic.

I'd do some cutting on the fenders, also the floor pan can be beaten back some and the seam in the wheel well can be bent over.

The 79-95 4 wheel drive Toyota pickups were not given a name in the states, so we call them "mini's" In 95 they introduced the Tacoma. All of which are called the Hilux in Oz, and the rest of the world I think.

The pre 2005 Tacomas here in the USA have a pinch weld in that area.

If your truck is the same construction in that area you can remove the plastic and hammer down the pinch weld to gain tire clearance.

Keep in mind that a body lift will not really raise you center of gravity by much at all. IMHO it's a good answer for this particular problem. (Hammering and grinding at the back of the fenderwell elps too.) ;)

Mark...

thanks for the suguestions everyone, but there cant be any pounging or hammering, it just wond be of any help, the tyres are scuffing on the floor pan right on the outside of where the pedals are in the cabin. i was thinking there are only three options:

1: raise the body or suspension
2: move the cab back along the chasis
3: get a xtra-cab and move the firewall back

thats all i can come up with short of moving the front axel foreward and im no engineer and not too sure on how to do it or what ill effects there will be on changng the driveline's components around

is there any other advice? ive seen hilux's with far bigger tyres then this,on cardomain there's hilux's with 33, 35 and bigger ive even seen a bundera here in oz with 44*19.5*R15's and he had no problems!

push-pull steering or cross-over? Just move the axle forward 1.5" w/ an easy spring perch re-drill and flip kit (requires cross-over steering)

does that effect the handeling of the car and what kind of price am i looking at.
oh by the way i apologise for the lateness of my reply to you helpful suguestions, they are very much apriciated, also is there any information about them? i'll start searching, although i have quite poor searching skills, although i shall try as i know everyone on this forum hates spoonfeeding and i sont want to be a bother, thanks again

33's on hilux

I have a double cab hilux as well, running the same tyres as you & same rubbing prob. I"m going to move the diff forward.Their are already holes in the mounting platforms for the springs on the diff.I also have old man emu suspension front & back but it still rubs. You have to shorten the steering shaft that comes off steering box & brace running from top of diff to chassis.Have seen a place in your australian 4wdrive mag that supplies adjustable of the above items. So piece of cake for you. let me know how you get on.

i had an engineer friend look at it and he feels that a suspension lift and bump-stops will fix my problem
