Hey guys I think my inner oil seals on my trubo have gone, there is oil accumulating at all pipe junctions going into the intake manifold, and off the turbo from the air box. :crybaby:

It just started so a rebuild and replacement is in order.

Anyone know how to imbed a picture in a post so that I can show what exactly is going on to you guys.

My plan is to replace with a slightly better turbo, possibly one that will boost earlier and is capable of higher boost. Anyone heard of a turbo like that which will bolt on to my little 2L-TE, and about how much, a rebuild or a decent used one will work too.

how long have you owned the truck?
what oil are you running?
how long do you let it idle in the morning and at what rpm?

I've had the truck since June, it had 56,000kms and now it has 67,000kms.

I've been running lately Castrol Syntec 5w30 for the winter start ups.
Just installed a wolverine electric oil pan heater and that really helps.
It's been really cold up here in Ft. McMurray, as of late -30, so I've been letting it idle for long periods of time, in the morning like 30min before I drive it, but my work isn't far away so it doesn't reach operating temp. As a result I've been letting it idle for like another hour.

you do not need a turbo, you are running a full synth right? this can cause leaks where you never had leaks before.
PLUS
excessive idle time will cause the oil to leak by the seals. my understanding is the seals work off of boost, if you never create boost then there is no sealing going on.
relax, drive it till summer and see if the situation goes away...
cheers

Turbo idle

Idle down time is most important. Hot shuts are the number one cause of turbo failure. Plus, a leak like that on a diesel can cause a run-away (scary).

unless you are using this as a reason to tell the wife you need a new and "better" turbo...
then bingo, you are good to go...

nope, a leak like this will not cause a run away. it takes a lot more oil than this to have that happen.

idle down is only needed when operating at highway speeds or high boost situations.

a lot of skidder turbos blow because they are creating high boost and suddenly stall thus robbing the turbo of much needed oil pressure.

That's a relief, I noticed it only start after the long idle run times, didn't put the two together.

And yeah it would be a good reason to tell the wifie that we need a new one, but really I rather get a sled for the winter so that is big relief, now I still have a tow vehicle.

Don't worry about me running her hard and then turning her off right away, I've got a turbo timer, me I allways let her cool down properly.

Thanks again Wayne, can't wait for the trip, I'm running 33/12.50 on my rig right now, I'm a little worried about what you said of climbing 4 foot ice walls, you think I'll rub in the fenders?

Anyways thanks again everyone

the 12.5 wide might rub... actually i think they will rub. most of the time it is more or less flat...
them are pretty big tires to be turning with the stock setup. i usually recommend the 33X9.5 but i did bolt a set of 34X10,5 swampers on my wifes bush truck and they worked okay...

I haven't really wheeled the truck much, I flexed it a little on a 24" thick downed tree and they tucked allright, I couldn't believe the rears did too. Really the only time they rub is when I back up turning, go figure
