Just recently put in a 6 1/2 in. Tuffy in the 40 using the bracket from CCOT. Everything lined up and it fit nicely with the exception being shifting into 4th gear. It will shift into 4th but just barely. The shifter knob touches the console. Is this normal?? Are there mods that need to be made to give it more room with the existing bracket?? My fear is that it isn't getting all the way into 4th gear and could cause lasting problems or even pop out of gear.

I did a search and found lots of info about Tuffy's and installation but didn't run across this problem.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

Poser's right!

On my 94 P/U, when I lifted the body 2 inches I had to weld an extension on the cane.

Well, I'd like to blame the beer, but prolly just cause of my inferior welding skills, the shifter was a little off for my liking. I took the rig to Javier's here in Houston. He put the cane into a vise, gave it hell for a sec, and VOILA!...purrfect.

Thank goodness for the experts we have around us.

I had the same issue in my '82 40. Some questioned me over Tuffy and their 'years of building the consoles' saying maybe it was installed wrong. There isn't that much to it is there? Anyway, I took the Tuffy console out and re-drilled the holes a little forward of their existing spots. I went as far as I could without causing too much trouble getting the bolts into position. I also threw some POR around the bolt holes to slow the South Florida rust problems. I can get all the way into my gears now. You can't 'palm' the shift knob, but you don't crush your knuckles anymore...which is nice. Good luck. I guess you could bend the stick too.

i had the same problem, just take the shifter out of the tranny and heat it and put a slight bend in it. realy easy just remove the boot and push down on the coller holding it in and turn, should pop right out.

Like RumBum said.. drill the thing. Make it fit, thats what a 40 is all about.

Thanks for everyone's advice, i will try bending the cane before drilling any holes and repositioning the console.

no shifter issues in my 82, I marked where I wanted the Tuffy(which was back and offset to the passanger side, redrill the Tuffy to match the captive nuts in the tub and bolt it down, not even close in 2nd or 4th gear to hitting. Did not use the tuffy brackets, just a spacer I made at the rear.

easy way to mark the bottom of the tuffy to match the captive nuts, take a bolt, cut head off, sharpen head, put bolt into nut, place tuffy where you want it, tap the bottom of tuffy(inside console) with mallet and bingo......drill out where the small divits on the bottom are.

I put one in my 1980 and had to do a lot of modification to fit around rear heater and shifter. Also the seats rub tightly on both sides when they are reclined. This will probably cause them to tear at some point. My opinion is that they are not quite a quick bolt in, made to fit application, as sometimes advertised. However they are definitely great consoles, and very secure.

Oh yea....the point of the thread....i would say bending the shifter is easier than moving and redrilling the console.
