Tub removal? How long did the removal take you?

Hi All:

I've experienced this a few times.

Take your estimated time and x 3 is about right! :D

Seriously, you never know what you'll find; nasty rust, sound insulation that needs to be laboriously removed, broken bolts, and so on.

Give yourself a bit of time for the task! ;)

Good luck!

Alan

Sort of a quick question....I hope.

How long does it take to remove a standard FJ40 tub from a body? Factor in two front seats, gas tank, swing out rear half doors, side steps and NO TOP, NO rear heater, NO roll bar, NO jump seats. Time is tight and I need to plan out my work....hope you can help.

Well we just finished removing my tub and I can answer my own question. Here is the workload breakdown.

Thursday night (2.5 hrs): seat removal, rear swing out door removal, fuel tank prep, loosened tranny tunnel cover, removed side steps, removed diamond plate covering sill.

Friday night (2.5 hrs x 3 people = 7.5 hrs), final removal of gas tank, removal of one door, removal of tub bolts, cutting of rear sill body mounts, cutting of tub/cowl seam, trip to Home Depot for new pack of saw zaw blades....beers, pizza, and a story about a girlfriend that accused a buddy of fathering her child....that took a while.

After final tub removal, we inspected the frame really well and were all surprised at is solid condition. We placed the aluminum tub back into the truck and giggled a bit.

So....about 10 hours is the final estimate....4-6 if you have some friends around and all the bolt cutting tools one might need.

Bahahahaaa. WTF. Seriously.

If we were better prepared with new blades it could have been done in an hour (after your time taking everything out). Having all the other stuff out made life much easier.

It all went pretty well, considering. Now put a pic, slacker.

My back 1/2 tub didn't take long at all to remove. The slow down was the seats, wiring, roll bar, and fuel tank removal. The tub was rusted enough that I was able to use a 12lb dead blow hammer to finesse the quarter panels off. I used a sawzall to cut the cowl section from the floorboards. I replaced all the body mounts, so cutting out the rusted bolts was a no brainer. All in all I think removing just the tub took less than an hour. The other stuff was about 2/3 hours worth of work.
