Hey guys,

Getting frustrated. been having weird weather in socal 55 degrees to 95 degrees over a few days and the trees are reacting and dumping sap on everything. I've been washing the care once a week but the sap is like baked in now. Tried high pressure soap and water, rubbing alcohol and turtle wax bug and tar remover. Nothing has worked so far. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of claying it later. Never had problems like this before here with any of my cars.

Thanks,

Bob

I caught mine after a foggy morning and used warm water and Dawn dish soap. Cleaned it right off. A friend told me that the dew would soften the sap and I guess she was right

X2 Rubbing Alcohol,....which is a main ingredient in hand sanitizer

Might have to use fingernail for the harder stuff....

Did you leave any of the products on long enough to penetrate? I thought the alcohol or tar remover would have done the trick.

I'm an Optimum fan and would use power clean, maybe ipa or wd40.

I use goof off. Just apply a little spray onto a cloth. Rub on the sap in a circular motion with a little pressure. Stuff comes right off.

I have used straight IPA 70% and 90%, but for some reason, just regular hand sanitizer works ALOT better. Actually, normal ipa doesn't really do much for me, whereas hand sanitizer dissolves the sap (even old sap that has been on there for years) in the same way a solvent would dissolve a chunk of tar on the paint.

I'll have to try the hand sanitizer. I left the alcohol and bug/tar remover on for a while per directions.

Kerosene works. Did not seem to hurt the finish.

A good coat of wax helps prevent the sap/bugs/bird-poop from sticking tight to begin with. If you've been power washing every week aggressively enough to remove sap there's likely no wax left on the surface. Get it cleaned up and give it a good coat of something like NuFinish and sap will be much easier to remove. Likewise, Rainex on the windows really helps keep sap and other crud from sticking.

I have used coconut oil spray for cooking, as well as pam, just spray it on rub gently with my fingers or hand and it will dissolve the pitch. Wash off and detail as normal. Works on everything with pitch, clothes, hands etc. Stuff also works well as a hand cleaner and is not harsh. Good natural solvent and lubricant(coconut oil).

There are 2 kinds of rubbing alcohol at most stores, 70% and 91%. Get some of the 91% stuff. My bud works at a body shop and it's what they use. I often park under a pine tree and go months between washes, and it works very quickly for removing old sap.

In a pinch, throttle body cleaner will work, just make sure the spot hasn't etched into the clear coat. Obviously, buff with a light polish and seal with wax when you're done - not going to start another book as I've written too much about paint care on this forum ;)
