Just wondering. This is in refrence to the dreaded leaky seal between the H55F 5 speed and split case transfercase. One fix is to connect them both via a tube attached at the filler plugs for both. My question is with the difference in height between the two plugs. Am I correct to assume that the transfercase will end up running fuller than required and the transmission will be running lower than required? If so, is there any bad side effects to this? Thanks.

If you have access to a lift, the replacement of that seal only takes a few hours (3 to 4 iirc), though you will probably want to check other things while you're in there... such as bearing preloads and wear.

So, it's easy to do it right.... why not do it?

I have one on my 70 for insurance since this seal ruined a tranny and xfer in my 40.

Basically no. Fill both cases to the fill plug as usual. Since the case fills the transmission if the seal is bad as it fills it moves the excess (more than the fill plug) back to the xfer.

Since the split case is basically 2 pieces it's alot easier to replace that seal than in a one pice xfer like the earlier 40's

So does anyone know the specifics of the plugs, i.e., what is the diameter and thread pitch? I am loathe to drop $55US on two plugs and little chunk of hose at manafre.

In my case I remove the seal and allow the oil flow free .. from tranny to t-case and back throught the hose kit .. mine from MAF.

Coldtaco,I think you might have the same problem as I had,the tranny draining into the transfer, unfortunatly the hose trick does not work in this case because the fluid will not flow uphill.
The good thing is you do not have to remove the entire transfer case.Remove the rear driveshaft, speedo drive, etc and split the case, you can remove the seal once the case is split and replace, there was a small o-ring on the output shaft in my tranny between the bearing and the output gear,so I replaced this also,in my case I think it was this o-ring that was the problem and the oil migrated between the gear and the output shaft, not past the seal.Just install all the gears onto the front case and the rear case is light enough to install,no jack required...

I'm not sure if is the same issue ..

A common problem on pre 1988 Land Cruisers is the failure of the oil seal between the transmission and transfer case. When this occurs the transfer case tends to pump gear oil into the transmission, starving the transfer case of oil. This kit connects the two filler holes, so the transmission can return oil to the transfer case as needed.
