hi, i have had a grinding /vibrating noise that comes through the body of my 97 fzj80. it started only happing while driving 30 through 45mph. then it starting getting louder and more vibration. now it happen from a dead stop when i press the gas pettle a deep growl and it dont go away. i was thinking at first it was my 3rd gear in the tranny now im thinking its torque converter. any ideas? im confused. this is my first toyota so im clueless what it is.

not exactly. ive looked under it. i noticed my t/c has a rubber mount (i think) but nothing connected to it the t/c. i haven't looked at the motor mounts or tranny mount. i will later on today. i wounldn't of guessed mounts to be the issue. since it dont happen all the time just when i start from a dead stop and around 40 mph it gets bad. but ill look to see what i see.

Do you mean you see the rubber mount on the bottom of the transfer case, but nothing for it to rest in? There should be a cross member that attaches to both sides of the frame, which is what that bottom rubber mount is for.

Yeah mate sometime the rubber mounts harden up and crack, I had a patrol with broken gearbox mount, use to vibrate like that

kilrspd: that rubber block hanging off the transfer case is a vibration damper, not a mount.

Interesting. But I noticed on my truck that when I removed that cross member (installed a heavy duty skid plate) that the xfer case wanted to sag a bit. I didn't risk lowering my jack more after I noticed the xfer case started to drop down with it. For the original poster I was curious if the xfer case was "drooping" somehow, causing possible vibrations.

When was your transm. and diffs. last serviced? Mike

dont know i got this rig a few months ago and havent done that that yet i have an appointment for it to get done on monday

i just went out to see and i dont see any sagging. i see 2 holes where a bracket could be for that vibration rubber thing on my t/c case. but i dont see anything really out of the ordinary.

A missing cross member under it would not be helpful and should be established (unclear on above post). I'm going to guess exhaust hitting something as top likelihood. Slide under with a flashlight and old clothes and eye protection.

While stopped, with the transfer case in neutral and transmission in whatever gear is giving you issues does the vibration/noise still exist?

not as far as i can tell. i noticed the t/c handle moves a good 3 inches to the right when i press the gas peddle and the brake peddle pressed. i dont know if thats normal.

Here's a pic of the stock cross member. See if you've got one. Also, it seems odd to me that your TC shifter would move that much.
