I was heading down to St. George, UT this morning from Ogden UT and about 128 miles out the transmission blow. None of the gears work, all I can hear is a grinding noise. Had it towed to Stephen Wade Toyota here in St. George. Does anyone here have any experience with this dealer? Or have any connections with a trustworthy person in the service department? What year remanufactured transmission would you guys recommend? I'm here till Saturday 02/09, hope they can get it fixed.

2000 LX 470

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Another 2000 tranny DOWN?! Sorry to hear it.

This doesn't help the OP, but statistically it's <5% failure rate for MY 2000 (at least from what is known on MUD). All other years are around 1%. Even at 5%, that would be enviable for other brands (i.e. Hondas of similar vintage).

Few people have had the c-clip on the end of one of the CVs fall off inside the dust cap. Without the CV's splines engaging the splines in the hub, it just spins. And with all open diffs, it will send it all to that wheel. Easy way to check is to lock the center diff and try to drive with that engaged.

That's gives me a little hope. Guess I'll see what the dealer finds out tomorrow. Thanks

Wow! Sorry to hear about that FJfan.

Hope it's something else like TM suggests.

If it is your tranny dont let them rebuild it, get a Toyota replacement.

the guy that pulled your job , is a 20 year vetran lexus tech retired to saint george utah , to spend his days in wheeling meca . is a old mudder . and still trys to keep up online , Yes the trans is no good all the grinding is coming from the trans , 2000 was a rough year for the lx tranz , they either went forever or died a premature death , the updated tranz from lexus has many updates to resolve this shortcoming .

Looks like your in good hands there. Hopefully they are able to get you squared away. Am I correct in my thinking that the 2000 was the anomaly in the lx/LC tranny? Is there any specific stuff that 2001/2002 guys can do to relieve their fears?

Sometimes (1 out of 10) when I put it in park, although the gears shift into park, the key does not release, so I have to push it up into park a little harder than normal.

I stopped by Toyota about an hour ago and talked to him. Seems like a nice/honest guy. I take it you work there. Do you drive your 55 to work? Would love to check it out.

my 2000 has 210,000 miles on it and still shifts like new. at 160,000 miles the splines in the cap on the right front axle gave way and would only move if you locked the center diff (like the other poster state). I am a service advisor at a Toyota dealer and this is how I purchased the landcruiser. Basically a customer got towed in with the landcruiser and after I gave him the estimate for a new axleshaft and flange as well as some other basics he got fed up and asked how he could just get rid of the cruiser. I asked how much he wanted for it and he said make me an offer. I told him 500.00 and he said ok it's yours, kinda crazy I know but I guess he just wanted a new car, (more money than brains I guess.) so, long story short I got it and have fixed it myself and have been enjoying it ever since (over three years now.) He had just had 4 new michelins put on it too at another dealer. Anyway, I will say that this has been the finest car I have ever owned and look forward to 300k plus on it.

Great story!

To the OP, again sorry for your misfortune.

If I could ask two favors of you:

- Would you be willing to send a fluid sample into Blackstone? It would be very beneficial to the 100 community to have a reference sample of what a failed trans looks like in a spectrum analysis.

- Could you post any details of your situation to this thread so that we can continue to capture all known data surrounding the failure mode?
