hey guys. i need some insight on the pto shaft output bearing (i think). i installed a 4 speed into a truck recently and am using several transmission/cases to mash up a complete running gear. the tranny/case im using came off of a small block chevy rig. it appears to be missing the large bearing that goes under the little dome cover on the pto gear shaft. i believe the bearing i need is highlighted in this photo, can someone help me verify? second question is, i looks like there is a little dinky bearing pressed into the area already, that i dont think should be there. its been a while since i tore apart my last case. is this common on SBC conversions?

the top picture shows the case im using, with some kind of bearing down inside the case housing. second pic is the bearing i believe should be here.

Some of the trans people use behind the sbc's dont have the long output shaft that goes thru to that bearing like the oem trans. The input gear is retained with a bolt threaded into the end of trans output shaft thus deleting the pto gear, spacer & bearing. Have no clue about the small bearing, possibly an inner race leftover ?

You need a straight cut PTO gear on the shaft behind the transfer case input gear in the picture. That is what suppose to be expose. Many four speeds had a spacer instead of the PTO gear. Bearing fits the in the transmission transfer case and transmission tail shaft thru the center.putting a bearing behind the input gear in an open space would not support anything.

I should clarify, I’m not running a PTO drive. I have the spacer installed inside the case. I just need the bearing that presses into the back of the case. I was just surprised to see that small bearing inside the case housing instead of the larger oem one. I DO have the second spacer and lock nut that goes behind the bearing. Is the bearing I highlighted in the last diagram correct?

Your picture doesn't really doesn't show clearing what your after. Only thing PTO related inside transfer case is the PTO gear. Your parts diagram is of a PTO that bolts to the transfer case. Nothing on that diagram is used in the transfer case. Pop the transfer case input geear out of the seal and take a good picture of inside looking back and the outside looking straight in.

Also no one can tell what your issue is using parts from different cases and not knowing what the date and three or four speed transmission bearing used. Would start by the date of the case your using.

I find looking at pic's and application guides at SOR.Com can be very helpful in sorting things out.

OP Sorry your post is too hard for me to follow.

The bearing you say is in case, the small one, any pics of that ? Did the spacer fit thru the " small bearing " ? It shouldnt have. And, there is nothing to hold a small bearing, the case hole is the od of the rear bearing with a maybe 1/8" shoulder to stop on IIRC, so cant figure how a smaller bearing would be there ?

my concern is that i did not believe the bearing circled in the photo was correct. i was trying to determine what should be there, from factory. its irrelevant at this point i called and talked to george esterer about it and after taking some measurements, i decided to just run it. with the spacer installed it all looked correct.. i was expecting to see the large bearing with the visible bearing balls and cage, not a plastic casing like a skate board wheel. just for giggles, here are better pictures. i already slapped it back together now. notice the taped out bolt holes from whoever tore it apart last. .

If there are closed end on both sides it's a sealed bearing. If only on one side it keep the oil from passing thru to the other side. That has nothing to do with the strength of bearing. Plastic is only there to seal the bearing nothing to support the bearing. Is the plastic is on both sides? This bearing uses gear oil on the I have.

This is one of at least eight transfer cases I have.

Looking your bearing it.does.look light duty compared to OEM.
