I plan on replacing the fluid in my new tranny with Amsoil and my mechanic didn't believe me that 100's don't need any friction modifier additives. He went and looked it up through one of their shop's tech resources and it said that it does need an additive.

Would the collective please chime in?

No additive needed for Amsoil. It has T-IV written on the bottle.

Additive is a profit enhancer for the mechanic so of course their Additive manufacturer provided manual recommends it.

What about the cheapo standard Federated Dexron? Do you need a modifier for that? I'm moving forward with Amsoil but it would be nice to tell my buddy he was wrong. :D

I suppose if you wanted to use a cheap Dex/Merc ATF then you might need a Friction modifying additive to make it more like T-IV but why not just get a T-IV rated multi-vehicle ATF. They are available at Walmart for ~$3/Quart.

Another reason to do work yourself. They want to have a single fluid in the shop for bulk buying and ease of stocking but a single fluid will not cut it anymore.

That makes sense. I ended up buying el cheapo stuff form my local parts guy because I just needed a quick top off to do some trouble shooting before I dumped Amsoil in it. That crap definitely not T-IV rated.
