Hello,

I have a 74 tranny and tcase setup. I replaced transition case with ealier 3

speed version due to a crack in the housing. The 4 speed xfer linkages are not

allowing the 3 speed xfer to shift completely into lo range........

I assume I need to get #6 for a pre 9/73 to make it shift correctly.

Is this correct? Do I need also need a pre 9/73 #2 or anything else?

Mel, I think when you mate a 4 speed transmission to a 3 speed transfercase that neither linkage works without some tweaking or fabbing. All the parts are similar, just not the same.
You might take some measurements and have the rod lengthened ot shortened, as the case may be.

I switched the transfercase top cover, putting a 4-speed cover on the 3-speed transfercase, but used part #45 from a 3-speed; this seemed to get everything working properly . I used the 4-speed shifting lever and linkage

Yeah, you need to use four speed #17 and linkage or.........give yourself the wonderfulness of a twin stick conversion.

If all you have done is replaced one housing with another, and transfered all your old t case goodies(nose cone, nose cone shifter, top cover, etc) over to the new case, there should not be an issue with acctuation.

The pre-76 tcase shift linkage, is a combo for rattling and not always positivly shifting the case, due to so many pivot points that can wear, creating slop in the system.

I am a fan of the twinstick set ups also, and would replace old junk linkage with that in a heartbeat, either fabricate your own or call Advance adapters.

Good luck!

honk- I do not see # 17

poser- I am gonna send u a pix it doesnt line up

gus- I used all 4 speed stuff including top cover
I am gonna try a 3speed part # 45 since its cheap and all else is in place

ANYONE HAVE PART #45 for a 3 speed?

In the blowup you posted, in the inset at the bottom. The shift actuating rod that is connected to the linkage and causes engagement or not of the front axle.

If you have a 4sp tranny, you need to use all 4sp shift components, including the top cover and the 2w/4w shift fork. If you have a 3sp tranny use all 3sp components.

There is no advantage to twin sticks with a Cruiser transfer case.

pin head- I am using stock 4 speed parts from a 12/74.

The 12/74 has a transition xfer (4spd housing w/ 3spd internals)

I had to replace the main xfer housing b/c of a crack.....

I used a 72 3 spd xfer housing and the same 12/74 oem xfer internals

everything went together smoothly.......

except the xfer shift mech....

wont fully go into low

is the new older style main housing the culprit?

I will post a pic to confirm it is installed correctly

if you get totaly stuck i have an 11/74 production case (narow style w/1.98to 1low).
check that your lever is in the right way mine has that problem if you install it backwards. (p/n 2 in your pic)

If you take the link from the tcase shifter to the high/low arm on the tcase, can you shift it into low by hand?

poser- yes

it works great....

like a babys butt

when all linkages are hooked up,

doesn't fully go into lo

like it does w/o linkages

I trying to source some 72/73 parts for some mix and matching ala gus

Do you have a #45 for me?

depends on how it's done. if you can elimate slop, there's a major advantage.

prob with the AA (store bought) twin stick is they are only available for set ups where they use a long adapter. I just tried buying one for my SM420 to 3speed tcase, using the 1" adapter plate. They told me it would not work since theres not enough space between "actuator arm" and the shaft that comes out of the nose cone to use their kit. So, I am making one..
I can prob make you one too, but you would need to weld up the "actuator arm" so it meets up wtih your nose cone properly.

Is the shift lever hitting the tranny hump when you try to hit low?

Did you adjust (shorten) the link rod?

Fabbing up a twin stick shifter for the sm420 isn't too tough. I flipped the shift arm on the top cover 180 degrees so it pointed toward the tranny so that the link rod would have a straighter shot at it.
