I have a small seep of gear oil coming from my transfer case. Just enough to catch dust really. I have searched and looked at the FSM, but I really can't tell what the little bugger is.

It is from one of the the electrical connections. The one on the USDS on the rear, just above the fill hole more or less. The connector has an elbow in it.

I am just curious what this is. Is it the speed censor? I would take a picture, but I don't have a camera today.

Thanks,

Ross

Ross,
That sounds like the speed sensor. I'm sure there are some pics here on 'Mud if you want to find one to be sure. It seals with an O-ring and those have been known to seep a little.

R&R is very easy; 15 min, 1 banana.

Gracias Sir,

It is the speed sensor. Here are pics I lifted from another post.

The whole area is leaky. I'll see if I can find how to address it in the FSM and further searches. Too bad I just placed an order with Dan.

The speed sensor/speedo gear is held in place with a little metal tab. Just remove one little bolt; then the tab slides out of its slot and you can easily remove the speedo housing from TC. (The o-ring's around that housing.) Go try it now if you want; you won't hurt anything. Don't worry if it's too late to add to your current order; you could go a looong time before replacing it if you had/wanted to.

Ditto on the speed sensor. I had the same leak on our old 92, and now my 97 has it. Easy fix, but after working on cars all day, it gets put on the back burner!!

You guys all deserve a . Thanks again.

Although I hated to do it, I added to my order via PM. Dan is very, very busy after being out 1 day and I hated to add a minor headache to what will be a very long day.

Thanks again guys.

Musta broke sumthin when you rolled that boulder around under your junk last December :flipoff2:

That was one of the first things I fixed on mine, pretty common and easy as pie.

As always Alvin, thank you. :grinpimp:

I changed the transfer case fluid and noticed a lot of dust/oil buildup near that speed sensor and on the rest of the TC.

Does anyone happen to know the part # for the o-ring ?

Thanks.

For my 94 HDJ80 the part number is 96711-24030.

Jon.

93&94 HDJ80's
Stourbridge, England.

The speed sensor o-ring is a 5 min fix.
I clean the area with simple green, let it sit for 5 minutes. Then hose it off before working on it. It does a great job.

Good idea, there's quite the layer of gunk underneath there. Yeah it looks like an easy fix - the most difficult part is trying to source that o-ring since the local dealers are saying it's special order.

Thanks again for the replies

So what if it's special order? They can't easily and cheaply get you one in a couple days?? If not, call C-Dan:https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=173756&postcount=1He'll get you one no problem.

Sorry for the gobbledygook formatting guys; my browser's acting up. Doesn't respond to paragraphs, etc, and won't even let me go back into the message to edit. Grr...

O RING

Easy fix. My O Ring was worn out completely.

The local stealership tried to sell me a whole new speedo cable and said they could not find the part on their schematic parts drawing. I told them to call their regional warehouse,2-3 minutes of the parts boy talking with someone on the phone, and the drawing was suddenly found.

The part number is:
96711-24030.

Same as post #11. They had it by the next day. Paid $6.72 for 2 of them.

There is an outer O-ring plus an inner small seal that needs to be pulled out; it seals the shaft (speedometer driven gear oil seal), don't know the part number.
