I sold a FJ60 (original MUD build thread - Dirtgypsy goes SOA ) a few weeks ago to a couple from Hawaii. They flew over to NC, spent a couple weeks hanging out with family and going to the Outer Banks before heading up the East Coast to go see

The transfer case is dead and they are stuck in Richmond at a shop quoting $7000 for rebuild and install. I'm waiting to hear what happened but the prior owner I bought it from just had the transfer case rebuilt and it doesn't have ~5k miles on it. I guess a cover wasn't reinstalled on the slave cylinder, getting minimal details through text right now.

That seems ridiculous and I'm wondering if anyone locally has any recommendations for a better place to go? I suggested going up to IPOR, but haven't heard back yet. Or anyone have a spare split case around?

Forge Specialties is in Fredericksburg too. Don't know anyone South of the burg though.

I don't know what kind of labor they would quote or what their schedule looks like, but there are two shops in Richmond that are familiar with Cruisers.

One of the owners(Rob) races an FJ45 Truggy in KOH and has owned a few classic Toyotas.

I'm just trying to give some closer options. I can't imagine that anyone would be able to do a turn and burn on a splitcase rebuild(if that's the problem) but who knows.

Thank you @iptman and @35inchoverdrive

I passed along all the contact information to him. I think he sourced a used t-case via SOR. Hopefully he can get it installed and going on his way.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Rob

@matzell and others, thanks for all the suggestions and help. He spoke to IPOR and the truck is headed up that way. I'm hoping they can get it fixed and no more major problems arise during their journey.

As I side question, is the family okay finance wise aside from the cost of repairing their 60, i.e. lodging, transport of the 60 etc.? That is a real damper on a vacation and a real hit to the pocketbook especially coming all the way from Hawaii. I don't mind chipping in to help a fellow Cruiser family in need, if that is the case and they are truly in need.

They are all set. Thanks for the offer. Forgot to follow up on this but IPOR took care of it for them. They were delayed a few days but back on the road cruising along. I'm just glad that this happend here instead of up in New Brunswick/British Colombia/Alaska

That is good news and yes, better breaking down here than in the wilds of North America. Thanks for the update.

Shout out to Lance and his crew, thanks for helping to save this family's vacation! Hopefully they got to soak up a bit of history while hanging around Fredericksburg.
