Did a pretty tough trail near Ouray, CO earlier this week and noticed a lot of fluid on both CV axles and the area around them when I got underneath to inspect yesterday. Thinking I should at least top off that fluid but I've never done this before. Is there anything special I need to know before taking this on? How do I know the proper amount to fill it with? Never seen this thing leak like this before so I'm assuming the fluid was getting by the seals during some of the more extreme trail conditions that were really flexing the suspension. No noise or issues otherwise, just don't want to blow a transfer case. Thanks!

The three diffs should be filled until fluid starts coming out of the fill hole. Front diff will be hard to fill without a pump but maybe you could manage it with one of those newfangled Amsoil squeezy bottles.

I think you’re talking about the front differential 🤔

How much fluid? Post a picture if possible.

Finding the leak
You can start by cleaning it all up and figuring out if the leak is worth fixing or not. Degrease and clean it up and watch for leaks. The transfer case is more towards the middle of the vehicle and wouldn't leak onto the CVs

Checking fluid levels
Open the top bolt on the gear box and check to see if fluid comes out and check the quality of the fluid

Changing fluid
Since your diving into all this already you might as well do a fluid change. It's worth getting a pump for this operation especially for the front diff which is where your leak is allegedly starting from.

You can start with the rear as practice since it's the easiest to access. Best practice will also be to get new washers/seals for all bolts ( drain and fill ) It can be a messy job but all and all can be done with the vehicle on the ground and sucking in your gut.

Sorry, yes I meant differential. Both CV axles are wet with fluid right now. I plan to top it off and wash the axles really well to see if the leaks continue. We're staying in a state park so not really conducive to doing much more work than that. I'm also scheduled to take it to a mechanic in Denver in few weeks and we'll address it while he has it, if its still an issue.

Another reason I'm grateful for the lift and bigger tires - I can actually get under this thing now without ramps!
