Tranny/Transfercase swap...

I am wanting to swap the tranny/transfercase from my 85' Fj60 to my 83'FJ60 and my question is that will there be any mods that need to be done? Are the bolt on patterns the same?

You 85 probably has the spacer between the tranny and transfer while the 83 doesn't. Look at the frame crossmember supporting the tranny. If they are different then the swap is more complicated - different driveshaft lengths and tranny supports. If the cross members are the same, then the swap should be straight forward. However it may be easier to just rebuild the T/T in the truck you're keeping rather than doing two T/T remove and replacements.

They WILL swap straight across especially if you have the parts truck beside you. I swapped the 4 speed from my '82 into my '84 and the 5 speed from my '84 into my '82. The cross members are not visibly different but I would swap them as well and you will see a difference. You will also need the drive shafts and possibly the floor plate (tranny cover).
