Well i could use alittle help! Here goes i have a FJ40 with TBI to SM465 advance adapter to 3 speed transfercase. I am getting the old growl noise comming from the drivetrain and am trying to narrow down my problem. So i disconected my drivelines and went through the gears noise is not as load as when going down the road. It seems to be in all the gears so i am leaning toward my transfercase???? Your thoughts. I have considered the tranny because i did get it from a fried were it was sitting out in the weather for who knows how long. I did pull the cover and the gears were not in the best of shape. It has gotten around 6000 miles on it since the install. Thanks in advance for your help....

Noise is a subjective thing to describe in words. Why do you think it is a problem?

Welcome.

When was the last time you changed the gear oil in the transmission?

In the transfer case?

What did it look like?

I changed the transfercase oil last weekend and it did not smell burnt but there was a little bit of metal shavings. There was not any chunks or anything so chalked it up to normal were. I will also ad to the noise. Call me crazy but it seems to be lowder when i am driving it and go around corners.

Iwill drain the trany tomorrow night. But i did drain it about a month ago and it was clean.

The reason i think the noise is a problem is because it seems to have gotten quite louder over the past month. When i am driving with the top on you do not have to yell but you do have to raise your voice. My brother who has the same set up is not as loud.

Welcome!

FYI: sm465's are known to be on the not so quiet side. Some claim that Lucas oil or the like will quiet them ... somewhat. In the end they will not likely be akin to anything in a newer vehicle.

If this is not helping then address some of the following (in no particular order):
are there bushings at all driveline to chassis mounts?
verify the trans to transfer coupling and or shaft end wear is not excessive.
check quantity and quality of oil in both cases
verfify the shift linkages are not touching the frame or body
shifter canes clearing the tunnel in all positions?
is the exhaust clear of the entire drive line? isolated from the frame?
are all bushing in place and in good condition
U-joints: are they sound
drive shafts ballanced?
drive line angles: if steep, do you have appropriate joint type for he application
are the diff.s full?
check for play in the transfer case outputs.
check for debris in the case bottoms
check the transmission shifter cane end: Mine made a bunch of noise when the cane end nylon bushing failed
verify that the transfer case is fully engaged in whatever range/drive you've selected. mal-adjusted transfer case linkages can cause partial engagement and the correspinding noise.

Just my .02
Best of luck
Post up what ya find

Just saw your last post.
trust yourself yet verify all the easy things first.

If the pitch of the noise changes when you go from drive to coast (eg on or off the gas pedal) you may have bad idler gear bearings in the transfer. This would be consistent with the "metal shavings" you found. This is the most common failure of the tranny and transfer that makes gear noise.

Okay so here goes. Drivelines are good they are brand new. Exhaust is clear and bushings are good on them as well it is a brand new system but i will check it again. i am expecting a little growl due to the gears on the trani being wore a little. As for the noise it is loudest when i do let off of the throttle after say having my foot in it. But 3rd gear does seem to be the worst all though it does make noise in all gears. Just a question what do you think of my trani transfercase combo? I have heard that the dana 300 behind the sm465 is a good combo also. i am thinking of switching what are your thoughts instead of fixing what i have.

Needle bearings on your input shaft of the 465 are most likely gone puting all your gears out of wack.and like PIN_HEAD says your idler gear bearings also.
