Well over the years it has been discussed as to how much fluid is actually in one of these things.

I did a search 2 days ago and got info stating a dry fill was 12.3 quarts or possible 16 if you beleive the people from down under.

I just swapped my tranny and it was about as dry as you could get. The pan had to be removed so it was totally empty and the TC had been dumped. There was still some fluid in the cooler lines as well as the cooler itself.

On the initial fill I put in 12 quarts of ATF. The last few where tough to get in but I thought that was do to needing the fill the TC and I didn't want to start the truck low on fluid so I took my time and got the 12 in there.

Took it around the block and it shifted fine so I parked it for the night.

Checked the level today and holy crap, 5" above the hot line!!! Initially thought it might be picking up some fluid from the sides of the tube and then decided to start draining some off.

Best I can tell I drained off a little less than 2 quarts. So an initial fill of 10 would have been a better starting point.

From my experience:

Dry fill 10 Quarts
drain and fill 4 Quarts

Always check your levels to confirm that you are at the correct level.

Thanks for the tips...I am building up the courage to do the drain and fill 4 quart cycle here this summer...
