The flat-4 plug on the 80 was torn up and unusable when i got it. I have attempted once to replace it, had limited time and was not successful. I am attempting again later this week.

I've attached a pic of a standard 4 wire harness and the plug that came off the 80. As you can tell, the plug that came off has an extra wire-red. I discovered that the red had something to do with brake lights when i was trying to figure it out before. Thats all i know.

My next step was going to be to dissect the old plug to try and see to which terminal the red wire was connected to.

Anyone know how this should be wired?

Thanks.

WHy don't you just bundle up and drive the 40 to Tellico and let your dad drive the 80. Problem solved.

Because I don't trust the 40 to get me up there. I haven't driven it for more than 20 min straight in 6 months, as it has been constantly down for repair and upgrade. I have no specific reason to doubt, just not sure it will. You drive your 55, I'll drive the 40. :D

Also, I want to be able to wheel the 40 hard and not worry about it taking me back to Atlanta. :D

Why bundle up and go deaf from noise when i can cruise down the road in comfort. :D

I need good trailer wiring anyway, I tow my atv around with the 80 too.

The red wire is the brake wire from the vehicle, the old plug had a converter built in... you will need to purchase one.

Basically it does this... A stock Cruiser has a turn signal bulb and a combo brakelight/parklight.. trailers have just a single bulb, it has dual elements but acts as the park/brake/turn.

The converter you need (or re-use the old plug) takes that brake input (red wire) and merges it with the park/turns... But it has a one way diode so the power doesn't come back... get it?

Autozone/Napa/CSK carry the part you need... easy to install, etc...

Good deal.

My 40 has a converter "box" in the wiring harness, I assumed the 80 had the same but hidden, didn't think it was part of the plug.

I don't think the plug is reusable, I will check out the local auto droid and get what I need, thanks!

Part# 48845 for the Hoppy brand converter... :D

If you have the factory tow package, you should be able to locate the converter in the US passenger side rear interior panel. However with the plug you have pictured, it looks like the converter is built in. Mine went bad and I spliced in the the Hoppy part quoted above and all was good again. Make sure you are picking up the right one, I tried two others before figuring out what actually worked

Consider installing a "proper" industry standard 9 pin metal RV connector so you can essentially tow anything. Cheap plug-in adaptors are available to convert to 4 pin or any other configuration. This way you don't have dangling wires to worry about when you are not towing.

If your spare is gone you can mount the 9 pin receptacle up under the rear bumper crossmember like so:

Access is easy and the harness can be laid across the top of the ball mount retaining pin. If you don't want to wire all the pins right away, that's fine. That could be done any time in the future if you decide you need battery charge, accessory or brake power.
