I looked at it this way. I've already had 3000 lbs of dirt in it and it was only half full. The trailer alone is over 1000 lbs. I have done alot to lighten it up but it's still a heavy ass trailer. It has a 9000 lbs axle in as it is. If I werent going to use it as a trailer to haul heavy things all the time like I've been doing, I might think about the lighter axle, but they way I tear s*** up, I'm better sticking with the stronger axle.

In the long run, I'm just going to leave it as it is and get me a 8lug spare tire. I should be ok like that. :)

Yeah it's do able. Might require a trip to a friends house with a drill press but yes we can make it from scratch
 
I definately agree with the KISS method when possible. But I don't think "a lot" of things could go wrong. If designed and assembled properly I don't see it having more issues. Certainly more welds and pieces but no big deal.

The biggest thing I see is having the shocks hanging out back. If you come over a rock at just the right spot once the arm itself would clear the shock would drop down on the rock or whatever it was.

On the other hand, after having a few conversations with you Kevin. At what point will you say "alright, trailer is done." reason I ask, this is obviously much more fab than the rack on top. Beyond the arms themselves as well. I really didn't look at the frame of your trailer. It could require moving or additional cross members... what I'm getting at is maybe this should go on the wish list for your next trailer, not that I wouldn't help you out with it if you really want to do it. Just saying its may be more than just welding some tabs on the current frame and putting the arms on. Might be better suited to a trailer designed with it in mind from the start, which could also incorporate some of the other ideas you've had.
 
I was curious about independent suspension on trailers. I know adventure trailers uses one. I think the arm system with an air shock would be he easiest/simplest for this setup. My main purpose is to get thoughts/ dialogue started on this. We have some pretty smart guys around here who have much to contribute. I am NOT planning to switch from a single axle/ leaf spring setup unless I have issues.

Picked up my trailer yesterday and towed it home from Houston. Looks great if I do say so myself. Tows like a dream. I even managed to back it down my driveway at 1:30 this morning. Only took me 20 minutes! :censor: Now I just need to make some time to go somewhere to use it.

You are or aren't planning on swapping your suspension? It seems like you left a "not" out of that last sentence.

My thought is that I'll have to be somewhat circumspect on where I take the trailer (I try to be careful about where I go with the FJ too, for that matter). It's not going to be able to go everywhere the FJC can go. But it's rugged enough that it will get to a lot of great places where you would never get a pop up or some other type of camper. So while I won't be dragging it down the toughest trails, I can take it on a bypass and get to pretty much the same places I would be if it I weren't towing it behind me. And the amenities of the trailer will beat pitching a tent every evening and living out the back of the FJ. I'm talking 1 to 2 week trips here, like my Grand Staircase/Escalante trip in Utah. The trailer would have been great! That's a picture in GS/E to the left there.
