very cool info.

If I could ask, especially those of you with the 1/4 mil trailers, what would you change or redesign? If you could build the ultimate trailer, what would it have or not have. What features would you fix. Besides things like 6 lugs / custom axle, long enough tongue for tight manuevers, good sturdy stance position for keeping it stable when dismounted. Ebrake?

If I could also ask you guys about the float features of yours versus a drop down tailgate? I think the idea of keeping everying dry and even floating 500 lbs sounds cool but is it a PITA without a rear tailgate? How about a waterproof tub and then something that acted as a table?

Here is my massive M116A1 trailer, 3/4 ton and about as large (if not larger) than a full size pickup bed. Too big for most trails. But it is one bad motha and is super heavy duty. I have the original canvas for it but it is ripped but I found a good vinyl (unfortunately) replacement for it for only $125 from a local ex-mil dealer. It would be awesome for camping. It originally was a portable power unit with generators inside, it even has a duct in the floor where the exhaust spins out the side of it... :) I plan on making it my house/base camp for a couple trips this summer... But I do plan on building a nice, small, wheelable trailer from scratch this summer possibly as well....

ALso could someone possibly speak about the dimensions of the trailer? I would be curious to know if they are too small or "just the right size" etc. What are the top / rim dimensions as well as at the bottom of the tub?

Trailer builder

So ya want to build a trailer eh??have fun problem is you can never get enough stuff in it or on it. I built my tailer from a basic M199 military. I can aul 4x8 plywood with no problem, and an other junk I have n the ard. Tailgate should be slide out and pinned in place not drop down, or hinged on the side similar to the spare tire carriers we have on the cruisers...op ok but do you sleep in it, or tent it. easier to sleep within, Propane, kinda risky on the trail stay with the Coleman bottles. jerry can 22 in min height to safely fit the cans. Watch the tongue weight, it will add up in a hurry.

Nice

Neat trailers guys, good luck on the Rubicon with em. they are worth every dime we spend and dont ever let anone tell ya NO..

My M416's internal tub is only 3' 6" wide by 6' 1" long by 18" high. If I own this larger version M101 type, I would cut out the middle strip so the internal dimension between wheel fenders be exact 4' 1" wide. So I can throw in plywoods nicely and not too tight. I don't know how wide and long it is now?

Cheers,

Here is what I would do that (my personal taste). Make it a bit narrower until it is 4' 1" wide between the wheel fender then cut the unneeded corner (frames would need to be modified if you do have guts.)

BTW, my custom drop down tailgate works great. All items are in water tight plastic container anyway. My trailer have a angled corner so it can rub rocks and tree in tight turning corner without damged the wheel fenders.

Cheers,

Andre,

I like the size of my trailer. I'm not sure what it's from, I think an old PowerWagon or Willys 'cause the axle that was under it when I bought it had left hand threads on the driver's side...an old Mopar thing ( I think)

It's a little over 4' wide and 7' long. A perfect size for what I do, I changed the axle out to match the track width of a 60-series, to lighten it up a bit and due to the unknown condition of the axle that was under it. (had a third member with no pinion and a chunk of tire wired into the pinion hole to keep the fluid in.)

I put an aluminum rack on the front, a tool box sits there and I can also fit 4 jerry cans, a shovel, hi-lift, and a beverage cooler resides there also.

I added a reciever hitch in between the front frame rails, and can put a bike rack in it. I had a tire carrier mounted there, but it broke off on one of my shuttle trips. I then moved the spare to the tail gate. As you can see in one of these photos, it sheered off too.

I am getting ready to re-vamp it this month. Plans are to add Heep-style fenders, and step/racks fore and aft of the fenders. Move the front rack forward 6 inches and mount the spare to the front of the tub, sitting on a cross-member and use a 45LV spare tire wing nut. Not sure if I should put one or two spares on it. I will add a rear receiver too and I'm also changing out the springs and hangers, the thing bounces about a foot off the ground when it's empty (hence the two busted spare tire mounts) I know I could slow down, but I get into 'rally mode' when I'm out in the desert...Oh, I'm also going to bend up some hoops, to hold my new-to-me Bushwakka family tent. And, adding fold up, telescopic stabilizers for all four corners so the when parked and the tent is deployed, the trailer is stable. The list keeps growing but that's it for now.

These photos are old, and I've posted them up before, but they're all I've got.

I'd like to keep this to the top for a few days if possible to see if anyone else has any more comments. More and more research. I am really diggin your trailer Ohywee Dan :)

I got the new springs, hangers, u-bolts on this past weekend. I think I went a bit on the heavy side...as usual. I put 3500-pound springs on since I still use this trailer to haul rocks/gravel/junk. If it were a pure off-road/camp trailer I think 1500-2000 pound springs and axle would be fine. My worry is, without it being loaded down, the tires will wear out faster. The axle is arced so it flattens out under load, if it's rarely fully loaded then I'll be running down the road on the outsides of my tires...

On another note...my new Bushwakka tent was delivered today! I haven't built the bows to hold it yet, but I will throw it up on my old rack tonight and hopefully get some pictures.

My biggest dilemma right now is figuring out where the hell to put my spare tire. Now I'm leaning towards hanging it underneath. I thought I had a spare FJ55 spare tire carrier, but I can't find it. I'll most likely just build a shelf, like tractor-trailers have to hold it.

Finally got it, and it stopped raining long enough for me to set it up today ( took a long lunch). I still need to build new bows for my trailer but the rack I have is just about the right height.

Mamma says we can go to Moab for Spring Break in two weeks, so that will be it's first outing. We'll wave as we crawl through the SLC traffic.
