Mike S.,

Great looking trailer!

Now that you and it are experienced (10,000+ miles) what would you change if you were going to build another one? I've been looking at used M416s but they are going for a premium. Having one built is starting to look like a better option.

Is your rooftop tent mounted on your trailer? If so how does that work for acess to the interior of the trailer?

nice trailers

Wow, nice trailers. And I never thought I was going to get much for a response after this sat untouched for quite a while...

Mike S. - Is your trailer a homebrew or did you get it custom made somewhere? Besides helping the m416 float, do the wings at the top of the side walls come in handy for storage??? I'm trying to plan way ahead on my trailer as far as the little things that come in handy. Like the side steps on Snook's trailer and locations for "liquids" storage. If I do get to build it, most of the offroad things will be add-ons later..... Anywho, just askin lots of Q's in a long drawn out design phase till the 's come in to pay for it.....

Anyone know of a good place to get torsion axles?

You want a extra clearance under the trailer?

There are other steps to take:
- Add 2' long by 3' wide bended 1/4" thick steel plate underneath the trailer axle so it will slide over rocks without getting trapped.
- bigger trailer tires
- put axle underneath suspension leafs

I am going to use 33" MTR tires on my trailer for longivity and extra clearance.

Solid axle gives trailer a more stabilty at high speed under heavy load. With torsion bar, you would need a sway bar and modification to the frame. That's my wild guess.

If the price wasn't prohibitive, I would make it all out of aluminum, except the frame. The water tank could be 20 gallons. I would move the axle forward about three inches to provide better ballance (the two batteries are in the tongue box) or find a better place to mount the batteries. The tongue weight is a little too much - but it still tracks very well.

I have a roof tent for it, but it is not on it right now. Opening won'y be a big problem, as the lid is hinged at he front, and I will put stronger gas rams in it...The tent is the AutoHome OverLand fabric tent in large... Here is one on an Adventure Trailer...

I designed this trailer, but it was built by Wayne Percival of Dixon, CA http://www.4x4fab.homestead.com/ind... Well worth the (high) cost of entry. M

Does yours have service brakes or just a parking prake? That would make it a M416B/M716B

Dave

I was mistaken, the M416 with service brakes is designated as the M416A1.

Sorry,

A couple of link for you to explore:

I have a beater civilian Willys jeep trailer I'm slowly making road worthy. These have a tailgate and stake pockets, unlike the military trailers. Mine is made up of two trailers. One had a good tub and bad frame, the other a good frame and all but dissolved tub. Will probably use this strictly for a small utility trailer. Still looking for an M100 or M416 to make a weatherproof trailer for hauling camping supplies in. Also looking for the much larger M101 as a companion for my 1951 Dodge M37 Weapons Carrier, but that trailer is too big to be useful for the Land Cruiser.

Kurt, you might want to add http://campausa.com to your list of trailers. No affiliation, I just like the concept.

Mike S. thanks for the link to the guy in Davis, great trailer and relatively close to home. Ill have to give him a call, and to everyone else who posted pics, looks good._Dylan

Maybe you will have better luck...but I couldn't get him to call me back (left a voice message on his phone). Let me know how you do...

chuckwalla.jpg

In the mid to late 1990's, there was a gentleman who was taking jeep trailers and converting them into camping trailers. He called them the "Chuckwalla".

Unfortunately, the links to his website have been dead for a long time, and web searches come up empty for these trailers. All I have are some photos he put on the web of his handiwork. Apparently he converted a fair number of M100 and M416 trailers at one time. My guess is that the every increasing costs of these trailers simply made it uneconomical. Pity, I think he had a good idea.

As you can see, it's a simple tube framework with two bunks that fold down, one on each side. The roof is sheetmetal. There's a cabinet in the front. The framework is covered by a weatherproof covering that also covers the folded down bunks when they are in use. On this particular trailer, the fenders are wider than the military fenders, to cover the wider "mag" wheels and tires.

Neato... mind if I borrow the pics?

Sankey Trailer

Well I'm just moving over from a Defender to a HDJ81 and I think I'll keep my Sankey trailer. Matched the Defender but no reason it wont work with the LC.

They're not my pics. They belong to the gentleman who was making the Chuckwalla trailers. Only he seems to have dropped off the face of the earth.

BTW, the fold down sides are bedsprings. It's not obvious in these pics, but it is in others I didn't post.
