Trailer length to wheelbase (9 Viewers)

Getting ready to buy a Travel Trailer. Will be towing with 2019 Lexus GX 460.

Wheelbase just under 110 inches. Searching the web shows 110 inch wheelbase = 20 foot max trailer length, for each additional foot need additional 4 inches of wheelbase.

In my mind, more important is length of distance from hitch to axle(s)?

Not an engineer but can’t wrap my head around this one. I would think with an anti sway hitch, safe driving technique and brake controller, should be able to handle up to 25 ft or so (based on experience towing my boat). Obviously staying well under weight limit for towing, cargo capacity.

I've no idea where that RoT came from, and I've not seen TR WB tied to trailer WB before. Could be rooted in real world experience, could be someone's WAG that has permeated the web. Friends of my grandparents routinely used to tow a 25' Airstream with a '75 K5. Wiki says that's only a 106" WB.

There is a formula for predicting the maximum speed before the tail starts wagging the dog. It's listed in "Trailers: How to Design & Build, vol. 2" by M.M. Smith. Before you get too excited it requires a "Tire Sidewall Stiffness Coefficient" and I've never found that listed anywhere. Nor does the book really talk about how to arrive at a suitable number.

Getting a trailer moving is almost never a problem. Getting it stopped is the problem. A travel trailer should have brakes on it. I'd focus on what the current best trailer brake controller is and try to stay well under the vehicle's max towing weight.

I towed a 25' 3900 empty, loaded guessing was 5K travel trailer from California to Canada & back in my 3" lifted on 37s Lx450 for about a month. Had to make several emergencies stops without an issue. 5K is my rigs limit. Im not dead...
