Question for ya’ll.
My buddy hit a rock hard enough to create a crease in his oil pan causing a leak (Xterra). It was about an inch away from the drain plug, so very near the bottom.

We were able to catch 4+ quarts of oil in a plastic tub after we pulled the drain plug.

To plug the hole I used a mill bastard to cut away the sharp bits of the crease, then we found a license plate screw that I could drive into the hole, with a o ring someone had under the head. Fit almost perfectly, and I think that alone would have gotten him back to the trail head.

I cleaned around the screw hole with gas as our solvent and got the whole area squeaky clean, then I used JB quickweld over the screw head and surrounding area to totally seal it up.

He drove and 300+ miles on it. (Including about 200 on the hwy home) Not a drip or a drop.

Anyone know how long JB weld will stay bonded in this type of application?

He’s going to buy a new oil pan cover…but curious.

My JB Weld fix on a hole punched in the bottom of my TCase lasted 10+ years.

Sounds like you did a proper prep job so he s/b fine… BUT… why chance it. Replacing the oil pan is not difficult nor expensive. Even a good repair like this one seems to be will fail at some point (mine did…on a rough trail). Luckily I still had some JB with me to get off the trail. Then I did a proper replacement once home.

Fix it now or fix it later.
