Just finished my initial study of the materials provided by the Gallatin Ham Club. Finished the ARRL Study Guide (70 pages).

Now to see if I can make the Field Day test on Saturday or not! And probably go through the study guide and read all the questions/answers again to make sure I know the stuff. Haha

If you get your license the point is moot, but the requirements of the "license free" use had specific requirements like requiring computer for programming. This is still rumor from what I can tell though so study away and have unlimited options!

Looks like I should be able to make it tomorrow. Unless work gets crazy.

Taken 4 online practice tests and passed each so far.

Well folks, @MontanaLax and I just passed our Technicians License tests this afternoon. :)

I've got study materials given to me from the Gallatin Ham Radio club if anyone wants them. All in PDF format. Basically a lesson plan/slideshow with corresponding self study test sections that follow along. I spent about 6-9 hours in total studying. Ended up scoring 30/35 on the test (need 26+ to pass). Total of 396 possible questions and tests are purportedly randomized.

Time to buy a radio!

So I just, with the help of a VE/Ham Extra buddy I met down in Moab, ordered a radio, antenna, coax, mount, etc.

At the June meeting someone told me not to pay to have someone install my radio. I forget who that was. If anyone has the knowledge and is willing I'd love the help! Only part that really bugs me is trying to route wires through the firewall and setting up the power line.

Hardest part is now though. Waiting for the FCC to grant m license and my stuff to get here.

Thanks 08BrickFJC! Yup, passed! Now it's waiting for a call sign and pricing new toys :worms: :bang:

But don't worry folks, I'm still going to organize exam prep for those interested. If anybody has any ideas or suggestions on when/where/how they would like to schedule sessions give a shout or PM me. I think it'd be good to have some ideas by the next meeting. I also plan to contact the HAM instructor to see if he'd care to join us for the next meeting.

Nice work! Thanks for all the effort on this.

@MontanaLax - FYI I just got an email from Harley at the Gallatin Ham Club. He didn't have your contact info. Apparently his mistakenly mailed our licensing forms to the wrong address. So he's now waiting for them to be returned by the USPS so he can send them to the proper address.

So, that's why none of us are in the ULS yet. So it's going to be at least a couple more weeks before we get licensed.

After all the information we had to fill out and he didn't have my contact info.....:hmm:
I was starting to wonder what was taking so long and now we know...oh well.

On the up side I got a delivery notice so my radio is waiting at the post office! New toys coming home tomorrow :bounce:

Thanks for the heads up @Kyitty

I have a dual band yeasu mobile i'm thinking about selling. just want a straight 2 meter(easier to use). What did you get and where from? Ron

A little BUMP to bring this back to the front....

Seems like there is some renewed interest in HAM licensing and there are still good links on page one.

Give a shout with questions and interest and we'll go from there.

Thanks,
Lax

Also, this might be a good spot to start a HAM registry...? Don't know if folks are open to that but as we add more folks on the airwaves it might be helpful. My handle is above, K7LAX.
