So I've been thinking of trading my '82 BJ42 for an HJ60. I love my 42 both for it's looks, off road capability and fun factor. The downside is that it really isn't all that practical and it rides pretty rough (I need OME in a big way). I wonder if anyone out there would consider a trade or have any advice on doing this. I am about 60% serious on this ... I guess I get bored easily and like change. I have a feeling I would really regret it though (no offense to you 60 owners). I assume a few have you switched from the 40 to the 60 ... any regrets? What were the positives and negatives?

negative is a 60 sucks off road in comparison to a 40.

positive, more room, more comfortable, a bit quieter...

get a 74 and be done with it...
;^)

Well, as a former FJ60 owner with a BJ42 I wouldn't do it. I've missed the extra cargo room about 2x in 9 mos., don't miss the sh!tty fuel economy, don't miss the tubby handling, do miss the nicer ride but I'm hoping to get around to installing my parabolic springs soon, don't miss the A/C cuz I got the organic variety with my top off the BJ42 (which is its own joy in so many ways), don't miss the carpet that just traps water and dirt, don't miss the faux chrome, and I won't even go into the 2F smog equipment or the 4 speed tranny because it doesn't apply.... I would never do it. Parabolics and a turbo and you'll love the BJ42 all over again. Get a trailer or rack system for the extra cargo carrying. If you spend any time offroad I just can't see doing this.

Just my .02

Tough one, depending on your needs...

I have the BJ42, BJ60 and BJ74...so can offer some comparison

BJ4* series:

Classic styling
More nimble off road
Funk factor
Harder to replace if you change your mind
Going up in value if maintained.
Not as nice an all weather driver

HJ60

More room
Nicer to daily drive
Going down in value due to JDM imports
Wheels well

Why not get a military trailer, turbo, etc as NorCal mentions...

Can you do both?

HJ60 better be an awesome truck for a straight across trade...

Quick thoughts off the top of my head...

you can't beat a sixty for family size fun. four doors to handle kids stuff, loads of cargo room in the back.
decent ride. still tough as nails...

A 74 still just a two door, sure its longer...

But I would be hesitant to loose the 42 if in good shape. They are a treasure thats for sure. But I also feel my BJ60 is one as well.

Thats why I am spending soo much time to make it cleaner. IMOP worth it,

I had a Fj40, lot of fun and a great off road vehicle. Now drive a BJ60, much more comfortable, practical and built like a tank. Lots of storage space, passenger comfort, and 30mpg ain't so bad. Tough call which to get, depends where you are in your life!

At this point I love heading out for a ride in the woods in search of mud (this darn province is all rock). But the truth is that I hardly get out. The cruiser owners out here don't off road and the Jeep guys are pretty clique. I usually end up for easy runs out on my own (as stupid as that is). I love my 42 a lot but it is really just for fun - not much good on the highway. The more I think about it the more I want to keep it. But having a comfy 60 that my wife would sit in would be pretty good too. Go easy on me with that comment!!!

dude, buy an 81 and be done with it...
sure you will need to hawk the house and rent out the wife but you will have the best wheeling machine built and it will last for decades if you look after it...
you will have a highway machine that your wife will love, fuel economy you can live with and room for the 6 kids i predict you will father...

sell the 42 and use that to pay off the credit card, no debts and the bank will help you out with the rest...

Amen to that. Or get a BJ60 and turbo it so you'll get great mileage and won't have to break the bank to get it.

I'm a bachelor so I think my above comments should be taken with a grain of salt. It does sound like a wagon is fits your bill.
