Just throwing this out there to see if there is any interest... I've been restoring the Fj40, but have recently been bitten by the Lexus (maybe Fzj) bug. I want to build an expedition vehicle!

The 40 has the original F.5 engine, and it runs great! Burns a quart of oil every 3000 miles. There are no leaks anywhere on this vehicle!

I purchased a 79 2f and am in the process of building a new engine. The crank is being balanced this week.

I have the top, side panels, and OEM weather stripping. The panels have been sand blasted. primed, and painted. The top needs to be stripped and gel coated.

When I began restoring this rig, I wasn't trying for a show truck. I wanted a nice, solid, dependable, mountain rig. One I could easily hunt, fish, pull my raft, and camp out of. Wheeling is fun, but not my thing. Of course, getting to elk camp might be considered wheeling!

Below is a short list of mods I have done to the 40.

4" Alcan lift with Bilstein shocks

Mini truck power steering

4 wheel disc brake

Dual batteries with stainless tray

Custom bumpers

Warn 9500 lb. winch

Console with Stereo

Dash box

Deep Sea auxiliary fuse box

New wiring harnesses (some, not all)

Alternator upgrade from 45 amps to 94 amps

Aluminum Radiator

Diffs rebuilt by Cruiser Outfitters

Rebuilt knuckles last month

Replaced rear floor, fender wells with 1/8" diamond plate. sandblasted, primed, painted, and bedliner inside and out.

New quarter panels and custom rear sill. This sill will NEVER rust!

replaced barn doors with custom tail gate/tool box

Blah.blah,blah

Bucket seats... these seats suck! They faded quickly and are poor quality. Need to be reupholstered or buy new seats

All of the above has less than 4000 miles on it. I'll post pics of the frame and axles in the next few days. I need to wash it!

All of that said, I'd consider a trade of equal value, OR, a lesser value rig and cash. If I don't find a suitable trade, I'll complete the project and sale it out right, then start a search.

I'm confident that I'm forgetting many things... so I apologize in advance! Feel free to ask me any questions!

Thanks for looking!

The first photo is the day I bought the rig. The 2nd photo was taken a few months ago.

Oops! Sorry about that. I'm a newbie on this section of the forum.

I bought the rig while living in Swan Lake, Montana. The rig and I are now in Lafayette, Louisiana.

I forgot to mention the 40 also has the following upgrades...

New Fj60 starter

New Trollhole dizzy

New Weber carb

Center Force clutch

Complete new exhaust, including the header.

New brake booster

33" Pro Comps have 90% tread

The price is $17,500 as she sits today. I'm in no rush to sell... to be honest, I'd like to finish the project. It's rare that I start something and not finish it. However, if the right deal came along...

I have a 1994 fz80. It has electric factory lockers , arb bull bar with 10000 warn on front, Ironpig rear bumper with tire carrier and sliders , ipf lights on front bumper

Here's a few of the underside.

This rig is wired for trailers and has a new wiring harness.

Today, I found a few areas of rust trying to creep up. I'll address this issue this week.

I have a new shackle bolt. but have not installed yet.

Has a new Carter electric fuel pump. It is wired to a rocker switch. She will only drive 100 yards, unless the pump is turned on. My 300 Win Mag is sighted for 400 yards... so I feel this rig is

Reasonable offers will be entertained.

This is still on the market. A couple of guys seemed interested, but nothing materialized.

I now have the fiberglass top being refurbished by a boat repair shop. Hope to have the top on by the end of July.

Thanks!

Keep it long enough and I'll find a way to buy it! . I hate to help a man sell something that I want;), but you really should update the post in the 40 section with all of the pictures and selling price.

Darasick, that sounds like good advise. I'll do that when I return home. I'm currently on the west slope of Colorado... Saw some SWEET rigs in Ridgeway and Montrose today!

I did this same thing. Im now missing my 40 as I knew I would. I would not trade my 80 however as I love that thing. Dig your build though and good luck with the sale.

Yes sir, I'll certainly miss her. Building this rig has not only taught me more than I could ever explain in this thread, but it built my confidence as well. I don't regret one minute, or dollar spent! It's been a great experience!

I should have the top on by this time next week.

I can't wait to start building an 80/450!!! :bounce:

This was a really shady deal. I did due diligence on car after talking to Wayne, got insurance coverage and had cashiers check ready. He e-mailed me night before stating the following:

"Good Evening Joshua,
I hope this email finds you well. Unfortunately, I have bad news....
I decided to take the FJ40 out for a final drive this afternoon, and visit a friends hunting/fishing camp. Not far from the camp, the engine began slowing and then died. It would not start again. Evidently, the oil pump stopped working and the engine seized. I had the rig towed to my friends camp and will leave it there for I awhile. I'll replace the engine at some point... but for now, I need to walk away from it. Until now, this engine has been incredibly reliable.
As disheartened as I am, I'm relieved this did not happened to you! I feel terrible about the Fj40 but I would have felt MUCH worse if you had bought the rig and this incident occurred. I sincerely apologize for this and also apologize for any inconvenience I have caused you.
I wanted to call you, but I just now returned home, and its getting late, so I decided to email. Also, to be honest, at the moment, I really don't want to talk about it. After spending countless hours and buckets of money on the vehicle, this incident took the "wind out of my sails". Of course tomorrow will be a new day, and hopefully the situation will look brighter.
Again, I can't tell you how thankful I am, that this did not happen to you.
Good luck with your quest for an Fj40. Despite this situation, they are awesome vehicles!"

I called maybe 6 times to tell him I would split the cost of reaping the engine but he would not answer or return any of my phone calls. If he sold the vehicle to another person he could have just told me and that would be fine, not hurt feelings.

Working on finding another FJ40 as I have heard they are great cars...

Nothing about this seems shady to me. Anyone who has poured hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars into a build, only to be let down, knows what it's like to have the wind in the sails taken away. It actually sounds extremely sincere. Give him a little while, the breeze will catch his sail again soon.

Or he can just trade me and be done with it!:D
