An update on this.. isn’t very old and is not staying put like it should. The good thing is the improved tether keeps it mostly in place protecting the positive terminal vs it falling down next to the engine.
 
Does the red sharpie ink insulate the terminal enough to not short when you accidentally drop a wrench on it :eek:
That would be some special kind of sharpie.
 
As mentioned before the flared top nut is supposedly so when you put a wrench on it to turn it...you don’t accidentally turn both of them if they happen to line up. I think that happens less when the nuts are horizontal like a jam nut. But up and down your wrench could slip down.

But it may also come down to assembly efficiency.

They probably agreed double nut for security.
And on the assembly line they noticed they could shave off 8sec of assembly time using a flared nut so the worker doesn’t fumble with it.
