Hello,
I'm getting all the parts and pieces together to install a Toyota V-8 in my 1962 FJ40 I have everything I need, BUT not sure on which way to go as far as Trannys.... Has anybody used Castlemains (Rod Shop) or Dellows adapters or bellhousings ?? I have a T-400 trans I could use but it would make for a long drivetrain in a 40  Anyway whats your thoughts guys.

Don

Sorry not input other than sounds ultra cool.

I know BJ on Roids did a toy V8 into his FJ40 slash 45 buggy, never heard the outcome or what tranny he used.

Could search Pirates Of the Rubicon for that info.

Being an Aussie and those 2 companies being Aussie companies they are very well known for their gearbox conversions/adapters. The Castlemaine Rod Shop is generally regarded as the better of the 2, but you won't have any probs with Dellow kits also.

I haven't seen the 1UZ (i'm guessing your referring to the 4.0) put into an 40 but I bet it has been done many times over here. The 1UZ has been put into so many different vehicles, great engine, bulletproof 6 bolt mains crank. The crank has held as much as 2000hp so its definitely bullet proof.

Are you going to run an aftermarket ECU? I would recommend that you do and look into some of the Aussie brands such as Haltech, Autronic, Microtech or Motec (the best)

Also they have been twin turboed many times over here and 600hp is easy with stock internals, but remember they are high compression, 10.5:1 and 11:1 for the 4.3's

My question is do you want an auto or a manual? There are lots of options. The T-400 can certainly be easily done and it will handle the power though I would recommend a 700, just for the overdrive alone its worth it and its a stronger box.

I found this site when I was thinking of putting a 1UZ into my Daihatsu F20 buggy project.

He use the original auto tranny from the sedan the engine came from and custom build an adapter to a mini case.

thats what it would do. use the stock trans and adapt to a tcase. im using a 6spd auto from an 04 ls430 with a 4wd tacoma tailhousing and adapting to a 4sd atlas.

Just as a nit-picky point. Cams are generally counted per head, not total. Toyota doesn't make a quad cam engine, they do make a DOHC V-8.

Unless you're going for crazy HP I think I'd not go with a TH400. It's a tough tranny, no doubt, but it sucks power like nothing else. The TH700R4 has a lower first and OD and is more efficient. The electronic versions of each 4L80E and 4L60E are pretty nice as well.

That's from a guy who has a TH400 in his 55 crawler and 60 diesel.

Toyota's transmissions are plenty tough too.

Gumby,
I guess it depends on how you count the cams...;) I also have a R150F 5 speed trans I may use just not sure at his point.. the engine is a 300hp 1UZ-FE VVT marine division spec.

Dellows use a CRS kit for the adapter anyways. Use a H55 and bolt it up, if you like manuals. Keep the stock ECU if you arent going to mod the motor, it will perform very well and save a lot of heart ache. Dont be scared off by ppl telling you that the auto ecu wont work with a manual etc, very easy to bypass. You'll find wring diagrams etc and info on looms at www.lextreme.com

Hope this helps, be prepared to reset your front springs as well, these motors are very light compared to the F motors.
Cheers

Thanks for the info... I will not have a ECU problem...I will be using a marine 1UZ with the complete harness and ECU so no auto trans is not a problem.

Don.....Did u decide on what transmission you will be running? Don't forget that the Tundra T/C drops on the drivers side not the Pass side. Best bet if you wanted a shifter would be the H55f with a split case. Though the Dellows and others use a 9.5 in clutch, the weight sould not be as big as a problem as the FJ 62 so launching will not be as big as strain. What happened to the 1F route you were thinking about.....

Hello Dave,
I'm going to use a R150 5 speed with a R/H drop T/C...also I have a line on some FJ80 axles...as you can see my stock restore went out the window:D next time you stop by the office we can run over to the house so you can see it...
