I'm posting this in the 80 forum because this is the smartest and most educated bunch on these type things and I may not catch the attention of CDan or Raven or Beo in other categories.

I am changing oil today on my Cruiser and my wife's Grand Caravan. I use the Toyota filter and Rotella in the Cruiser and have used Mobil1 and K&N (HP-2004)on the Caravan. I am getting ready to run over to the Checker to get the K&N and I call to see if they have any HP-2004 (~11.00ea) and they are out till Monday. I also have to go to the Toyota dealer to get my oil filter for the cruiser. I checked on the K&N website for vehicle applications that the HP-2004 fit and there are several Toyotas that it fits, including the 1987 Supra 3.0 non turbo.

Would you rather use the K&N or the Toyota filter? Does anyone here use Toyota filters on non Toyota applications? With good results?

Thanks,
Dave

ha ha! whatever ;)

toyota makes a great air filter, 3 stage i belive. you cant go wrong with that.
imho, k&n filters are tried and proven also.
over oiling a k&n can give you MAF problems.

i run both on my 60, havent had the k&n in for awhile

either way you cant go wrong

I thought we were talking oil filters here. Are you guys even on the same page?

k/n oil filters are very good but for the money i'd say you can't beat a napa gold/wix filter..... how much are toyota filters anyway???

Ha! And your first replies are about the wrong type of filter entirely.

Bypass filtration is probably as good as you are going to get, but I would prefer Toyota over K&N oil filters any day of the week. The only non-toyota oil filter I would use would be a Mobil 1, and even still I don't think they are as good.

K&N's oil filters are made by Champion Labs, they make filters sold under a laundry list of names including, AutoZone, Bosch, Deutsch, Mobil 1, SuperTech, Valvoline, etc. an average quality filter. I prefer Toyota, Wix (Carquest or Napa) or Purolator over them.

Ah, but the Mobil1 filter is much different from the rest of the Champion Labs filters.

In case you've lived under an oil-filter rock:

:D

Thanks for noticing the rock that I live under!:flipoff2:

Yes, private label product is manufactured to the specs of the customer, all of Champion's filters are not the same. I thought we were talking about K&N?

I run the 15600-41010 Cruiser filter on my 440 Magnum Mopar.

I doubt that there is a gas engine spin-on oil filter that is larger than the 15600-41010.

I'm talking about using a Toyota OIL filter on the wife's 3.3 Grand Caravan over the K&N OIL filters that I have been using since new.

I went to the Toyota dealer and asked for a filter for a 87 Supra 3.0L and the dude hands this teeny filter to me and says "Let me double check that in the computer because it looks small for the 3.0" It turned out to be the right one and it would fit. I just couldn't bring myself to buy that cute little thing (only 6.00) I ended up getting a Napa Gold filter for the Caravan and a Napa Gold 1515 for the Cruiser.

I don't doubt the Toyota is a better filter, I just had the whole smaller can't cut it thing in my head. I'm going to go back to the dealer or call Cdan to get one of those little guys and cut it open to do a side by side to the K&N I just took off. I'll report my findings.

So other than Dan's Dodge, Does anyone run a Toyota oil filter on a non Toyota application?

Dave

I run a K&N OIL filter on my LX450 and like it a lot. I buy in bulk online. I paid less than US$9.00 each last order - I can dig up a link if anyone is interested. I don't have any problems with the Toyota filters, but I think the K&Ns are fine. I esp like the hex nut for easy removal and the extra capacity.

WHY?

if you don't oil them they don't work the way they are intended to
i dont know really, the first time i pulled it.there was total mess.it just made me nervous.im going back to toyota.i suppose the other owner could have used to much.how much do you use jim:confused:

The truth is that if you are running any decent filter (wix, Champion Labs), you should have no problems. For the Chrysler, I personally would go for the Napa Gold Filters or an M1 filter.
