Hey guys, just wondering which one would be a better choice for oil filter and why. the new Toyota small oil filter(made in Thailand) or Wix 51515? I know the Wix filter is much larger but is the new Toyota small filter any good at all? I currently have Toyota filter on my 92 LC right now just to try it. but I want to hear more from you guys about these two filter.

Thousands of 80s and millions of other toyotas are running the small Toyota filter. Can't go wrong with factory parts.

I have been advised by the powers-at-be to avoid the new "Made in Thailand" small filter and go with the Napa Gold 1515 (i.e. Wix 51515).

As my supply of the "Made in Japan" small filters has been depleted, I am currently running a Napa Gold, so far so good.

Just my $0.02

Why the bigger the better?

I use the large Mobil 1 filter with anti drain back. Very good filter

I would like to keep using the new Toyota small filters, but if it's not a good filter, then that is a bummer

My '91 seemed to start up better with the Napa Gold 1515 vs the other Napa filter (the white one). Both filtered well. Haven't tried the small Toyota filter. On the BITOG forums, Napa Gold oil filters get high praise

Is the Napa Gold the exact same as the Wix 51515 or is the Gold better?

AFAIK the Napa Gold 1515 is the same as WIX 51515. Not sure if theres any difference other than labeling between the two. There is also a napa platinum oil filter but not sure if theres one offered for our rigs. The white filter is NAPA proselect, i would avoid this one and spend the extra $2 for a gold filter

IMO nothing wrong with it. I've cut them open before, plenty of media inside.

The smaller casing requires less oil to fill up on cold starts if the anti drain flap seeps due to debris or whatever. And our engines are quite gentle on oil, might have something to do with the large capacity and the built in oil heat exchanger.

IMO shopping around for a better filter is for the 1% improvement people. If you're changing your oil at 5,000mile/8000km intervals, the factory filter will not shorten your engine life.

I did my first ever TLC oil change last week, so I am far from an expert. However, I'm in the Purolator PureOne camp. I have seen it do well in the various online filter autopsies and have used it in everything I own that it is made for since they started making them. I really like the textured finish as it makes oil filter tools pointless. The one I used was the same size as the Toyota one. The RX and LX use the same filter and I may put a longer one on the RX next time just to make grabbing it even easier. But then that's yet another filter type to keep on hand...
