Does anyone here own one of these AWD rigs? Anything to watch out for on the '01 & '02 models? Just trying to learn more in case one of the 80's need to go due to the long commute into town for work.

Thanks.

My dad owned one for a couple years, just one of the nicest rides with lots of get up and go.

Highly recommend this unit, actually I highly recommend any toyota for that matter......

I have an '04 V6 AWD, just bought it this past June. There were several changes in the '04 model that made me look for one over an '03. I believe it's in the tranny, better air bags, a little more guts in the V6 engine, better traction control, some other stuff, but the changes were significant. The back seat is fully adjustable in the 04's. I think that is the first year for tire pressure monitoring too. Mine had the 3rd row seat but it is totally useless, so I took it out to gain the additional storage that it took up. I have plans to make a hinged plywood cover so I can get the flat floor back, and have some hidden storage.

It's been perfect so far, it should be turning over 60K within the next few weeks which means it's off the factory warranty at that point. Not really great on gas (20-22), but decent power and it handles better than you'd think. Mine has the towing package, which is also something worth looking for, it includes the hitch & wiring, an additional tranny cooler, and a bigger alternator. I've towed my utility trailer a few times and it does very well.

Styling is typical Toyota, pretty boring. The factory audio system is pretty bland, I may change it out to something that has NAV and iPod input some day. There are TONS of them around these parts. I don't drive it very often, it's the fiance's DD, and she loves it. It does VERY well in snow & ice, even with plain Michelin all-seaon tires.

Thanks for the info, helps out quite a lot. Hmm, I wonder if I can swap my 80 for a Highlander....

My mom has an 06 4wd V6 Highlander, and she loves it. The only issue was the stock Toyo tires that were very bad, and they made the truck horrible in the snow, however since she went with quality Michlins (sp?) it is perfect.

We have a 2001 highlander, AWD version. The only thing we've had an issue is oil burning, due to bad valve cover gaskets. That apparently is kinda common, so replace those and you've got a kick-ass 1MZ-FE engine. It tows our 3500 lb camper and a 3900 lb FJ55 like there's nothing behind you. Comfortable and efficient for an AWD, plus I can get it into places that my mom cringes at  Great in snow and winter, dirt roads, and even the mild off road. Road friendly and great for hauling kayaks & gear. You will not be disappointed.

Wow, didn't realize that a V6 had that much towing power! Thanks for letting me know. Curious, what can I expect to pay for a '01 AWD V6 model these days (street value usually differs from KBB)? Would love to trade someone an 80 for it if it comes down to that....
