I've been trying to make sense of the nomenclature Toyota uses for bolt designations, and thought I had a pretty good handle on it. Others here on MUD have posted some helpful information on the topic (e.g., nomenclature used on bolts to designate a single captive split washer - 91611-XYYZZ, where X=head marking, YY=bolt diameter, and ZZ=bolt length). One question I've been trying to make sense of is the nomenclature used to indicate a bolt with a cutting thread on tip vs. a tapered end vs. a flat tip (what I'd call a "normal" bolt).

I got to looking at this more closely yesterday when I was cleaning and prepping bolts to use on my '86 FJ60 project vehicle. I ran across two identical, original bolts, from different FJ60 applications, but with different part numbers (at least according to various online parts diagrams, but knowing those aren't always accurate). So I proceeded to do a Google search using both part numbers, 91616-40820 and 91651-40820. One of the hits was a Toyota hardware database: Toyota Part Number Hardware Database

I've just started looking at the database and accompanying legend, but so far it looks like it could be helpful. Although I'm not trying 100% of the time to use the same hardware as factory, I'd like to try to use the correct type, strength, and length of bolts for a given application. Another issue (or non-issue) is that there were bolt changes between the FJ60 and the FJ62, sometimes length, sometimes strength, and sometimes both. In my case, it adds a little confusion because I'm swapping over the majority of the FJ62 systems to the rust-free FJ60. I'm also trying to use the best of the hardware available, with the last resort of buying a lot of new OEM hardware (I have accumulated a pretty big inventory of Toyota hardware over the years, and I'd like to use up the good parts). I know I'm probably being a little anal, but nevertheless it's interesting and a good learning experience.

Has anyone else run across other sources of information on Toyota hardware designations? I know there is a lot of information in various FSMs, but it's spotty at best.

Count yourself lucky to get any bolts from Toyota for the 60. Many of the original bolts for the 60 series are long gone and the next closest thing has been substituted, sometimes with disappointing results. I.e. too short, or longer than the original. Also finish will be different and other aspects of the fastener.

The old Toyota bolt code used to follow a decipherable system. No any more. There's no way by looking at many new bolt part numbers any longer to guess what you're going to get.

I found that out on most of the new hardware I've bought recently, for example the bolts for the FJ62 power steering lines at the frame. One thing I'm trying to do is to organize my stash of good hardware into bins, starting with the more common types and sizes. Quite a bit of what I have is like-new, from various vehicles I've parted out over the years, so to me it's worth spending some time to do an inventory. After my '86 FJ60 build I've got quite a few projects lined up for my '71 and '76 FJ40s, and (maybe) for my '84 FJ60, if I decide to keep it and swap things over to a decent (body and frame) parts '84 FJ60 I have stored at my place in Nevada.

After doing some more searching I ran across this thread post by @davework I haven't seen before - now I know the source.

I'd be interested in anything you all need for the 60 series. Glad to see that some of the hardware is in the database I compiled.

To your question about deciphering hardware PNs, my experience has shown that there just isn't a good rhyme or reason. At least not good enough to be able to rely on it without having the bolt in your hand. But I'd sure like to help if you find out anything. I also have the raw data from the database if you want to mess with it.

By the way, my database shows both of these as M8x20 Hex Indented, but the former is captured split washer, silver, with cutting thread, the latter is captured split and flat washer, yellow zinc. But you say you had these in your hand and they were identical? If so, I would say the diagrams are incorrect, or it was switched on your truck for some reason.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, right now I'm looking at both bolts side-by-side. Both bolts were pulled from two different FJ60s, but only one of the vehicles was purchased by me new (my '84 FJ60), and I know the two bolts from that vehicle (91651-40820) have been on the vehicle since it left the showroom floor. Here's the parts diagram:

However, 91616-40820 is the FJ60 application given on ToyoDIY for Brake Tube & Clamp.

Detail on these two bolts:

91616-40820 hex head indented, captive split washer and flat washer, cutting thread at tip, silver

91651-40821 same as above

I bet the part number is wrong on one of the diagrams, which is not unusual from what I've read.

Here's what I have from Toyota, both of these are M8x20, but different washers. Toyota may have changed these (superseded) vs what is on your original truck.

Thanks for posting. Here's what both of mine looked like (not the best quality photo):

not sure if it will help, but my older fj40 parts books has a great layout on the nuts and bolts, i'll try to find the latest book and post the page.

Holy crap! You have a 60 that you bought new in 1984! Way cool!!

Yep, on March 23, 1984 at Toyota West in Las Vegas, NV. Brand new off the showroom floor, not out on the lot with the other "lesser" Toyotas. My wife and I had to decide between the '84 FJ60 and an '83 FJ40 sitting next to it. Decided on the FJ60 and drove it home that night - brand new for only $13,690.00 plus $787.18 sales tax.
