How difficult or expensive is it to find 1HD-T parts in the States? Are there other Toyota diesel engines that would be easier here?

I think the 1HZ would be easier as they saw use in the mines in the U.S and Canada. But, I don't even own a diesel. :( Just a tired ol' 3FE.

I haven't tried getting 1HD-T parts, but I wouldn't avoid buying something with a 1HD-T for parts availability.

I have had no problems getting parts for mine (sometimes takes some work from CDan, but I have been able to get just about everything), and I don't own a single US spec truck.

Just carry your own stock of spares for the consumables, because needing to find an oil filter tomorrow might not happen.

If you can get a good 1HD T,dont hesitate ,as once its set up right it wont need too many parts.
Its also one of the best all round engines they made
I think the 2H and B engines are more common in NA and thus, there are more parts.

The 3 things you will need with any toyota diesel in America
1 Credit card
2 A daily driver(in case parts are going to be a few days)
3 A small stock pile of service parts and any bargains you happen to come across.

Thanks for the input. I talked to the owner of 80 this morning and he's firm on the price and I just can't part with that much cash right now. It's not perfect but if he took care of the small things he might get closer to his price. Look for an 80 with 1HD-T conversion from SOR on ebay. It has ARB lockers front/rear and maybe a Slee lift, don't remember.

the 12 valve 1990-1995 1HD-T shares many common parts with the 1990-1998 1HZ and a lot of the 1998+ 1HZ and to some extent the 1PZ. The 24 valve engines a little less (like they don't take the same valve cover gasket)

Since the 1PZ, 90/98 and 98+ 1HZ are north american engines parts can be found. Things like PS, vacuum and water pumps, valve shims, valve cover gaskets, alternator adjusters, etc are all common between the 6 cylinder series. Turbo seals are easily shipped overseas and you can have a stock if you need them.

Injection pumps, starters, alternators, a/c clutches, injectors, etc can be found new or rebuilt easily in north america. 98% of the injection pump is available in the US from Denso.

The only *problem* with the 12 valve 1HD-T is it is getting old (14 years at youngest).

Rick,
I've been having the same worry as the OP. This is great news to hear as I am going to br bringing my 40 with a 2001 1HZ swapped into it back to the States eventually. When you say above the "98+ 1HZ is a NA engine" what do you mean? Is the engine being manufactured in NA now or is it now included in some Toyota vehicle that is being imported into and sold in NA?

OP,
As others have said don't pass on a great deal on an current production Toyota diesel because of parts worries. Although I'm not loving the prospect of having to buy a second car based on the understanding that my supposedly unstoppable bullet proof ride might be stopped and sitting hopefully in a garage and not on the side of the road based on parts worries.

north america means the parts for the engine are brought through the Ontario California warehouse because they are used in Canadian mine trucks. Therefore, parts checks etc can be done by dealers in the US who try to find parts for our trucks. it is a good thing....

You bet it is a good thing:bounce::bounce2::bounce: That is some of the best news I've heard in a while. Do you or does anyone else in the thread know the model and the years of the Canadian Mine trucks. The reason why I ask is I had horrible luck here in trying to find parts from the dealer until I knew the model and year of other Toyota vehicles that used the same part as I as looking for in my 40. Once I had the year and the vehicle, e.g., 1990 HZJ 71, I could pull the diagram and print it take that to the dealership. The parts folks could then look everything up find it in the system and order one for me. Without the diagram and parts number they would always just say we don't carry those parts anymore, or in this country, etc.
Thanks,
John

From my 12H-T experience I can tell you this much. Be careful where you get the engine/vehicle. Make sure the seller can continue to support you in the future. Most importers can/are willing to do this.

Second, I can usually get non-US parts through my Toyota dealer if I know the Toyota part number ahead of time. Our dealers have parts locator software that is restricted to US parts only. However, if you tell them the part number they can search for it and get it from one of the west coast warehouses.
