We already have a 2008 GX470 for my wife and after me driving it and me working on it I’ve begun to love it...a lot...and I mean a lot. While I prefer the 470’s engine response / power band, exterior aesthetics and simplicity versus the 460 I am dying for a little ventilation in my seats and a little more modern interior.

Obviously the same rules apply with the 460 as all other used vehicles with checking the usual suspects. But what I want to know are these:

1. What trims / years should I look for? We want to semi-copy our 470’s build for some overlanding. My budget is going to run less than $25k, more like around ~$20k. I have a black one I’m already keen to look at.
2. Any 460 specific common / serious issues I should look out for?
3. How hard it is to install something to use carplay with and or a large android screen radio? I just love carplay too much to give up.

I wouldn’t be opposed to buy an already kit’d out 470 but I want to explore this option first.

You should look at a 5th Gen 4Runner limited too!

From reading your original post, you'll want to be sure you have a Premium or Luxury edition, depending upon what year you're looking at.
If it's a 2010 to 2013, you'll want a Premium.
This will ensure you get the cooling seats, 3 climate zones, better sound system, etc.

Quick note about the seat cooling when you use it, you'll notice it more if you have your HVAC setting for your feet and legs. This will push cold air down and under the seat so the seat fans pull cooler air up into the seats.

Here are some posts on CarPlay:

You might want to research these solutions before deciding on what year GX460 you want. They are not compatible with all years. The '10-'13 years radio is quite different from the '14-'19 and I'm sure the '20s are different as well.

Well I got a great offer on my Charger, so I took it. I went to the dealer I bought our 2008 Lexus GX470 from and got a screaming deal on a 2010 GX460 platinum.

I’ll post up more once I have dinner tonight.

Is it a Premium edition?

I’m assuming based on what I read I can put the same 265/70/17 wheels and tires we have on our GX470 on this GX460 yes?

Yes, 17s will fit a 460. They typically come with 18s, but 17s will fit. Just as 460 front calipers will fit the 470, etc. Rear calipers, etc are the same

To your question about carplay, I recently installed carplay in my gx470 by installing a grom vline 2. The install required removal of the glove box, removal of the cd changers, and removal of the dash vents and pulling the navigation radio and running some plug and play wires inline some of the stock wires. Overall it only removed the cd changer and instead installed an android unit that takes its place and runs on 8.1. It has wireless carplay and wired android auto. So far I like it. I've got a bluetooth obd scanner and I run torque pro on it to read my various temperatures. It is a nice feature.

The Vline 2 is not unique to the 470 as there is also a model for the 460. I don't know the installation procedure for the 460 but I can't imagine it is too terribly difficult. Overall it has been a nice upgrade. Happy hunting for the right vehicle for you.

Congrats on the 460! Looks like Plano/Frisco/McKinney. Looking forward to the build.

Excellent. I’ll probably order these next week

Thank you! I found this and I’m keen to try it.

Congrats!

Thanks!

Little Elm! You’re close. We are moving to Greenville in early September. Going to do each of our GX’s side by side on mods to a point. The wife’s 470 will be the overlander whereas my 460 will be setup for some off-road but not nearly as much as the 470–at least that’s the plan. I’m sure once I see the mods come together for the 470 rig I’ll duplicate them on the 460 Haha!

Greenville is a good spot, it'll help stave off the growth from the metro another decade or so lol. Before you know it people will be living in Oklahoma and claiming a north Dallas address lol.

Too true!! I grew up in Frisco when there were less than 3k people and Celina was a trashy podunk one blinking light town. Now progress has made its way through Prosper, Celina and now approaching Gunter. Even Sherman is growing fast. We cannot wait to move to rural Idaho. All this progress and junk is wearing us out. Haha.

I left Plano at the end of the 2014 and there was no love lost lol.
