Toybox or Axles?

Where should the money go?

I got a video on the Rubicon of the 60 crawling. I need to find a site to host it.

I might be able to help you w/ that...

x2 Doubler...If I had my 203 in place I wouldn't have grenaded my longside axle shaft recently.

Toybox dude.

Dylan

Are you saying you'd do it the other way around from how you did it? Isn't the toybox the most recent mod on your rig?

How do you like the toybox with the H55?

Awesome. Thanks for all the replies. I'm leaning towards toybox now. Now I need to figure out if I can do it myself or if I need to have Marlin do it. If I can do it myself, then I would have some money for the longs.

BTW, how are those 3.73s working with the 35" tires? I'm about to go that route for a little bit.

It's o.k. You need to give it a bit of gas when starting out in 1st so it doesn't lug but the highway RPMs are nice.

The other thing for Ducks--

I'm guessing you could do the entire ACT and never use the Toybox. It looks like mud bogs, water crossings, rivers etc, none of it technical crawling. If the ACT is your trip of a lifetime, then I'd do the H55f, and Longfields.

But.....You live in Kalifornia, 2 hours from the Rubicon and 4 hours from Dusy. Ask yourself where are you going to go more often. You seriously should join the Wagon Run at Rubithon this year, and check it out.

What you have now is perfect for Death Valley, perfect for Anza, perfect for Mojave, perfect for most of Nevada, good for ACT, but you basically can't go to the coolest places that are closest to you. Just food for thought, but gear reduction will get you into places you can't even go. That would be enough for me.

Toybox, dude.

Ducks, Alaska is awesome and you don't need a ToyBox or longfields. You need time and money and commitment. It is totally worth it.

For preparing your rig, think about the 6,000 mile road trip. I drove 11,000 miles in two months in 2001. This means all maintenance and service is up to date. And everything is top shape when you leave home.

For off-road, focus waterproofing for river crossings, mud bogs and rainy days. The major obstacles are mud bogs and deep water crossings. The rocks and steep hills are fewer and far between.

A big purchase would be a good strong winch and quality snatch strap.

My favored mod would be a extra good suspension that allows you to floor it in long whooped up mud bogs with steep banks on the exit. Speed and momentum work great if you don't break a spring or shock mount.

Finally, I didn't realize you don't already have the front locker so I would get that before the ToyBox. For the type of wheeling I suspect your rig will be used you can't beat a ARB in the front. The front locker would be good for Alaska too.

You know chicago, that's a condition that's easily remedied, especially since you're doing a vortec swap.....

Naw...Im quite pleased with the "condition" as it is. That is why the 4L60E is going in, in place of the A440.
Manual is okay. It has its advantages, but I like wheelin an auto.
However, if I were NOT doing the engine swap, Id be doing the H55 with toybox. I WOULD NOT do manual without the box behind it. Stock is too "lurchy" in the rocks for my tastes.

With some patience and help on here and calling Marlin Crawlers, you can do the toybox yourself. You will have to change the driveshaft lengths, modify your crossmember, and modify your transfer case shifter. Also I still want to make a custom transfer case skid plate cause the stock one doesn't cover it anymore since it moves back with the toybox.

Another option which I did is to just take your transmission and transfer case to Mudrak and have him bolt the toybox to everything. Then you can pick it up and install it yourself and do the stuff I mentioned above.

I talked with John at Marlin Crawler yesterday. I guess the gear that goes in the split case has an unknown ETA. He said that is supposed to change in the near future. Once the gear becomes available, it takes them two weeks to put the kit together.

I'm going to pick up an h42 from Georg this weekend. Since my land cruiser is my only vehicle, I'll work on mating the toybox to that h42. Once I get that done, I'm thinking I could put the whole thing in over a weekend. Sound good?

Ducks not that my 2 cents matters but this year I got to goto the ACT08 & Rubicon, you will not use the Toybox in AK, mud tires & a winch YES! Front & rear lockers will make ACT much easier.........MUCH easier.

2 weeks ago I got to wheel part of the rubicon with "The Fox"........ if your in CA & trails like that are in your back yard then a toybox is the ticket.

Lines will be easier to take, more control staying on lines, drive train under less stain.

Good luck & trust everything George says...... honest fellow!

I've ordered the 30 spline longs, 4x4 labs six stud steering, a knuckle rebuild kit from Kurt, and an Aussie locker for the front. I'll just periodically be giving Marlin Crawler a call to find out when the gear for the split case becomes available. Thanks for all the advice.

(I currently have mud terrain tires, an 8274 winch, and a rear Aussie locker.)

It's interesting that the poll results are almost even with the toybox just a little ahead.

I've decided to not get the Poly Performance rear axles. Do people mainly upgrade their rear axles when they do engine swaps? I plan on keeping the 2F with maybe a 1HZ swap in the distant future. They both put out about the same amount of torque.

Do people break their rear axles? When I took the Rubicon training thing with Harald Pietschmann we ran into two Jeeps that had broken their rear axles. Too much skinny pedal according to Harald. I'm looking forward to putting the toybox in and running the Rubicon in my own land cruiser. Definitely want to make the Rubithon this year and actually be driving.

I broke a rear with a tired 2F and almost no skinny pedal. It broke in Old Sluice right at Volkswagon rock. It isn't that hard if they get bound up. Major PIA to fix on the trail. Still, the rears are pretty strong, and I'd definitely beef up the front first.

Driveshafts aren't expensive to have modified. A longer front is an advantage IMHO.
