First off, I did a search, but didn't have the time to read every hit, so I scanned them. My apologies if I missed a crucial one........

Here's the ad..."FACTORY TOYOTA electric locker, complete third member with 4.10 gears, comes with everything to install. $500"

It's out of a 1999 4Runner. My Tonka's (see sig. line) axle code is G292, so according to the corresponding info, it should be an 8.0" R&P, 4.10 gears, 2-pinion.

The questions I have include the following.....are the e-lockers worth the trouble? Anyone have any reviews? Is $500 a good deal for it? To me it seems like a fairly easy swap, but is it REALLY? Will this work well in my '85 or should I save my money and go with something else? I'm not a grease monkey, but I do love to wrench, so I'm wanting any and all info you guys might know about. One of my buddies says he'd snatch it, but he's got a WHOLE bunch more savvy than I do. What do you think?? Thanks!

Yes, thats what you want for the rear of your mini truck. yes they are worth it. I have installed 8 of them in mini trucks and all are working flawlessly. you will need a welder (could get by with JB weld but I dont reccommend it) , a grinder or cutoff wheel, and a drill/tap. Brand new they are $750 from a TLCA dealer and you can order them in 4.10, 4.30, or 4.56 from the factory all set up. So just figure out if its worth saving $250 to buy a used part that you know nothing about.

I don't think the R&P is the same in the 85 as the 99 4runner. Almost positive it is not.

What you should do is pick up a complete Tacoma rear axle with the e-locker and swap the whole thing out. MUCH easier to do.

I've seen several complete Tacoma rears with the e-locker go for between $600-900.

I'll let you know if I see a complete axle for sale.

If the 99 has an elocker it has the older style 8" gears. It will work with any 8" diff after housing mods.

If the tacoma, or newer runner does not have an elocker, THEN it is an 8.4" diff and no those will not swap into older housings. They do not make an elocker for the 8.4" diff.

AWESOME information.......THANKS A BUNCH!!! I'm liking the idea of swapping the Taco axle in. I play in the water, so if housing mods are necessary, how difficult is it to get a good seal?

Just got mine installed last night. Axles should go in tonight.

The mods are not difficult. You can grind the clearance in the housing for the collar & fork with a 4" angle grinder. I've read posts where the installer did not weld up the flange on the housing- I did and would again. Getting the surface flat can be a challenge. Ideally you would weld it, set it up on a vertical milling machine, indicate off the 3rd mounting flange, mill the welded up surface, then mill the clearance for the collar and fork. I used a file ;))

I bought mine used, regeared with new 4:88's for $800. I found the same deal, about $500 for a used one, but when you include new taco gears plus an install kit it was about $300 --> about the same total price.

Thanks a bunch, everyone!

New Idea...

Got it, Thanks!

Toyota Rear Axle Widths:
55" wide, '79-85 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug
58" wide, '86-95 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug
56" wide, '79-95 2wd Trucks - 5 Lug
60.75" wide, '95.5-up Tacomas/4runners
66.75" wide, '93-98 T100 trucks

MMMMMMMmmKKKKKKay.......If I throw a Taco rear axle in, what would I want to swap into the front? They don't seem to be comparable.

Stock Toyota front axle measurements for comparison:
55.5" wide, 29" spring perch centers, '79-85 Toyota trucks and 4runners, SA Hubs
58.25" wide, 29" spring perch centers, '79-85 Toyota trucks and 4runners, IFS Hubs
63.5" wide, (set up for coil springs) 90-97 FJ80 and FZJ80 Landcruisers
'86-95 IFS front end is about 58.5" wide
'93-98 T100 IFS front end is about 65" wide

I think I may be better off to just get the Aussie lockers and install them in the OEM axles. What do you think?????/

Awesome info on elockers guys, very helpful with a mod i am 90% committed to...Can anyone detail the difference in engaging an elocker vs an ARB

I have ARB at present in my 40 and am looking at putting 80 series diffs with elockers under it. The ARB is pretty much instant on and off.
How much slower is the elocker, and can it be done on the fly - or only at slow speeds?

thanks scotto

Time to engage is maybe 2 seconds.

Mine is in, drove it to work today for the first time. Still need to finish the controller circuit so I unlocked it manually using a battery charger. I would call it a    job- need to understand basic circuits, weld, drill and tap, and be able to R&R rear brakes, axles and 3rd.

If you've go those skills I highly recommend it.

In my FZJ-80 and my 01' Tacoma the time to engage varies. Sometimes the rears don't lock in my FZJ, the locker in my Taco locks most of the time, and it can sometimes take a while as well. I am looking at the cable kit for my FZJ, Downey has them:

41200-R Toyota Pickup/4 Runner $ 155.34
41200-F Toyota Landcruiser w/o axle* $ 157.01

If I ever get around to installing them I will post my results.

Interesting. I wonder if the factory controller slows it down. I do think it takes longer in my 80 that the one in my 4runner. 4runner is controlled by couple relays.
