Towing with the LX

So I picked up a 10x6 trailer today. I hooked it up and towed it to our farm (can't have a trailer cluttering up my yard!) - so I was cranking the jack to unhitch it and then all of a sudden the rear end lowers.....does the vehicle detect the weight and adjust accordingly? Damn cool if it does. This entire time the truck (is it a truck?) was running - should it be shut down when hitching/unhitching? Even though I have the warranty, with the AHC I don't want to **** anything up. Gracias (in honor of immigration day).

The AHC will compensate for the tongue weight. It is really a smart system.

Yeah dude, self leveling suspension rocks. To make it a little safer I hitch/unhitch with the back glass raised up and once I'm done, close the back glass and then the suspension will self level without my hands being near anything.

You should RTFM There may be some other trinkets you don't know about.

Someone please explain Toyota's theory that trailer lights should only work if the ignition is on. I spent some quality time cursing Toyota the other day when I thought my trailer lights were not working, spent time trying to diagnose the failure, etc., and then realized that the ignition had to be on. To me, this is not a great design, what if you are stuck on side of road at night and want to turn on the hazard lights? or the running lights? Why should you have to have the ignition on?

Anyway, did a 800 mile tow this past weekend. On my 2002 LX, with a 4500lb boat, double axel trailer, got average of 10-11mpg at 65mph with cruize control, and overdrive on. Seems like pretty good results to me. Going over the grapevine here in So. Cal. was slow, like 35-40 mph, but steady nevertheless.

I thought if the lights were on “auto” the key had to be on, otherwise it worked normal- even with the key off. (I leave mine in the auto position).
