Hey Ya'll,
I've got to tow an 85 FJ60 about 135 mi. looking at some rental sites and this truck appears to be way to F'n heavy to be towed on a Tow Dolly or Trailer
Soooo I'm looking for any suggestions from anyone who might have some experience. Flat Towing?. the trip would be on the interstate I85 and I75. Or
should I Just get the tow dolly and hammer down?

get AAA membership

you'll prolly need it anyway... they have a long distance towing option that does not add that much to the yearly and you can let them do it for you. just make sure it doesn't run so they will have a reason to tow it... maybe someone stole your rotor and distributor cap. whatever, but most likely the AAA guy is gonna try to make it run, unless of course that is impossible.

then it is on their insurance and you don't have to worry about breaking some rules about overloading a dolly.

I have towed my '84 FJ60 on a tow dolly from MA to IN (1100 miles). I made SURE the tires were inflated to the max pressure shown on the tire sidewalls (dolly tires here...). I also pulled the rear driveshaft to prevent problems. Pull the rear driveshaft, lock the front hubs, slide the t-case in 4WD and load'er up. Strap the tires down well and make sure the safety chains are wrapped around the front axle good and tight. Check everything after going a couple miles then at every fuel stop.

I would also recommend you NOT hammer down while towing. :) Remember that you cannot back a loaded dolly so park accordingly.

Have a safe trip!

Nick
