Have a cubemate that's looking at a Touareg for the wife and it got me to thinking. Has anyone ever wheeled with a Touareg?

After looking at one at the dealer (while getting the wife's car serviced), I had the impression it would perform quite well off-road.

Thoughts?

I know, I thought the same thing at first.

BUT, take a serious look at the VW. Good ground clearance, good weight distribution, good torque.

I think it might surprise.

Off-Road Magazine named it 4x4 of the year for 2004.
I'll have to look up the issue w/ I get home.

i have driven one and can agree that it probably has good torque - it was slow as hell for a v8. as far as the off-road capabilities, can't vouch first hand, but overall i was not really impressed.

It has a height-adjustable suspension, like the LX, or the Cayenne (which is built from the same platform; can you imagine shelling out the bucks for a Porsche only to learn it's actually a VW???).

I respect it, but doubt it could touch even a 100 Series off-road.

My $0.02 (since I've never driven one),

I'd like to see one with 33s. I think the diesel has plenty of torque.

The 5.0 liter V10 TDI with 310hp and 553 ft-lbs is nice. Rated to pull 7716 pounds. 7.5 sec from 0-60mph. Balances out at 55/45 front to rear. Only comes with a rear locker which is a bummer. VW did wheel this model during its testing phase.

If this TDI model tunes out like all other VW/Audi TDI's you will gain an average of 32% in both horsepower and torque from just adding a 400 dollar chip. Thats at the wheel. Throw in an injector and nozzle set and you will reap about 900 ft-lbs and 520hp at the wheels. All for well under 2000 dollars in upgrades. Also this isnt all of it. There are more upgrades which can throw the torque well over 1000 ft-lbs and the horsepower above 600hp.

like said above porch and vdub went into the design together and spent plently to design that supention and all that. Ive heard good things about them and have sat in one a few times. there not a landcruiser but there better then most heeps in my eyes

Plus it has 3 locking differentials. But on the downside, the double-wishbone suspension makes for not so good articulation and the unibody construntion isn't the best for off-road use.

My Uncle has a Turd-egg (sorry, that is the nickname) and loves it for getting groceries and such. When I suggested we go wheel it, he took my beer away from me.

They live on a dirt road and it snows where he lives. Works real well for that stuff.

I like the V10 diesel with the impressive torque, but in articticulation, carrying capacity/volume etc IIRC the LC is best, and in OZ the price tag is double the LC so makes it hard for most, and the country dealers (55,000 people) won't ever see one where lots of LC's are sold, they said to me they would only be available in the capital for what we call "Toorak tractors" meaning 4x4's that only ever see the bitumen owned by the folks with all the cash falling out of their pockets. I expect if the 4.4 litre TD LC for 2006/2007 gets going, its torque/power would be very good, don't know if the diesel will be released in USA. .

Diesel is definitely in our future in the new Tundra heavy duty trucks, but I'd be shocked to see one in the US LC or LX550. My understanding is they will have a 5.5L petrol v8.

I remembered there was some usefull info about this on Club Lex so here it is from a gentleman who has owned 2LX's and a V-10TD Touareg:

Quote from Doc C on ClubLex
I then traded my 2000 LX for a 2004 Touareg V10 twin turbo diesel. The powertrain of that Touareg SMOKES the LX hands down. I had it for 5 months and sold it and ordered a 2005 LX. There are things like build quality and dealership experience and capability and resale value that far outweigh HP IMO. So, for those people who see things the opposite way and HP is everything, they should probably look elsewhere. The LX is underpowered, no question, but it exceeds the competition in so many other areas that HP really doesn't seem to be an issue. I have a sports car for racing. I don't need to race anyone in my SUV. Take care and happy new year.

The powertrain was incredible. The clubtouareg site has forums dedicated to "Problems/bugs" and "TSBs" that are FULL of nightmare stories of reliability. It has a great interior, but the radio controls are counterintuitive, the NAV system is worse than you can imagine. It is based on 5 CDROMs that have WAY less info than the 1 DVD based system of our LX. KEyless entry range was 3 feet. I'm not kidding. The back seat was the most uncomfortable seat I've ever seen. Anyway, I got out of it ASAP. VW has addressed a lot of the problems with later serial numbers, but why would they release a $62-65K vehicle with known issues and make the owner go in for service time after time? Oh, by the way, the dealership experience was like watching 3 monkeys hump a football. VW is not ready to sell cars in this price point. That's why the Phaeton sales are in the toilet as well.

The power of the VW was amazing. It is very quick and makes passing an easy task. It was very capable off road, but not even close to the luxury and build quality of the LX. Take care.

Ever since the incident my cousin and I had with his Bronco, he just doesn't trust us...

It took us HOURS to dig it out and we were powerwashing it when he came home from work:)

My wife drives one, an 04 w/ V8, I steal it once and a while.. For a small V8, it flies... not many other SUVs will run with it on a twisty road, It will do 100mph+ down the highway and then take you on some pretty serious trails...For a vehicle that does not articulate much, it goes offroad quite well. It will not touch a Toyota for reliability, but the pure build and design are stunning (deserves an Audi badge)... something even Lexus dosn't do.

VW has introduced an Expedition model, swaybar disconnect, sliders, full skid plates, winch etc etc. Not sure if the US will see it, but chances are good. Look here http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cfm/newsid/2041227.001/volkswagen/1.html

I didn't read the thread. I thought I'd just drop down and comment:

Do you want a world class top reliable vehicle (Toyota) or a unreliable P.O.C. with a powerful motor (WV)?

This year at Pismo, I took my '98 and my brother brought his Toureg. He was chatting it up telling me what a thrashing I was going to receive with his "more-ground-clearance-than-a-Hummer" Toureg. Suffice it to say, he ate crow. Despite sucking in the dunes, I think the Toureg is a nice truck. I think they did a nicer job on their project than Porsche did with theirs. It's not a Land Cruiser.
