Hot water heater goes down at ~8:30 AM on Easter with a house full of guests

Commercial 99 gallon model new is $6700 (on Amazon).

Hoping it is what I think it is: simply the igniter

Any advice on a NEW hot water heater to buy is welcome if I have to go there. Prolly need to go > traditional 50 gallon, but likely not the same model (AO Smith Cyclone Xi).

Have propane or natural gas? On demand heater. I've used Rheem in the past with good results. Pretty sure that Jerry has one if you need a local reference.

Do a on demand water heater. I have two at my house and i dont regret it “at least yet”. You dont want to keep 99 gallons of water hot all the time. If it is propane disregard what i say. Propane burns too dirty for me to recommend at tankless.

I have natural gas.


Also now - -there are these heat pump water heaters - but I think we use too much hot water here to do electric.


You guys run into these yet?

I run a Bed and Breakfast with 4 guest rooms and need a lot of hot water for cooking etc.

We also have a 5th room that daughter sleeps in and we have a separate apartment - so 6 rooms, 6.5 baths B&B *sigh*

FWIW I have a ng tankless 13gpm or 199k btu IIRC, no pressure regulator on the incoming water line. so I had 120psi when I installed it. and could run 5 upstairs faucets at the same time...nice... I would think water pressure would be a possible issue with 6 bathrooms...tankless is my advice

The heat pump has been a big fiasco. I will do tankless i have seen it with a mix of tank and tankless. Or two tanks in series.

Can do a hybrid tankless system. Small hot water tank tank to give really quick hot water while the tankless warms up.

I am looking forward to moving to a tankless system in our house.

That makes the most sense to me, but seems hard to get people who want to do it.

I would think that what would be best is with the thermostat AFTER the holding tank and one BEFORE and some fancy algorithms to adjust the on demand temperature to adjust for usage, holding, etc.

There are also circulation systems you can install that loop hot water around the building almost constantly, which ensures that there is always quick on-demand hot water, and it'll never run out. That's what hotels do.

Yea we have a circulation pump that runs full time and makes a huge difference even though our house was built in 1912 and has LONG runs up to rooms in a couple cases.

I guess the large loop plumbing is even being done now for new residential homes according to our plumbers.

My tankless has a circulation pump on a timer. I have it ser for when the kids take the baths. In my side of the house i have a regular tankless and it does well with hot water delivery. If you are going to have a pump all day on. I will do a tank for gas use reasons.

@Roxx - - Timer on circulation pump is freaking brilliant. For me, it could come on at like 6 am and then off at 11 am - and then back on at 4 and off at like midnight.

As somebody that spent a year of their life in the Rheem R&D lab, tankless with the circulation pump is the way to go.
