So, Im always having to deal with all the tools I gotta take when I go on a long trip as I usually explore alone...

I have a rather large tool bag when I get to throw all my tools but looking for the right size socket or wrench is a bitch as they seem to find their way all the way to the bottom of the tool bag...

My wife found this little bags at around $17 for two bags and they worked great to keep all my sockets, wrenches, pliers screw drivers and other tools separate and much much easier to find !!

We got them at the Fry's Electronics..

Here is a couple of pics

I bought a couple of similar tool bags from Sears a few years ago and have gotten good use out of them. I like them for tool storage.

I have 4 dewalt 16" tool bags and used to carry my basic tools and few spares as well .. but about sockets and small toos that you may need in any long trip I keep my rigid tool box .. it's just plain easy to keep all stuff in the right place compared with any bag ..

bags are usually messy but perfect for long trips and save space. I can fit everything I need in a fairly small bag, pretty complete kit.

Make sure you buy something fairly heavy duty. I am using Dirt Bagz. It is taking a hell of a beating and holding up fine.

I found a tough dewalt bag at lowes..... but I have the same issue....finding the right socket or wrench in the pile is a pain in the @$$.
I think as noted that having a number of bags is the solution...because a tool box gets to be too heavy to haul around and then you have the same issue with finding tools. (one of hte portable types where the top splits in half. I may go the small bag route too. One for the sockets, ratchets, extensions...then one for wrenches / pliers... and maybe one for whatever else I htink I need. I would ike to have something better organized but not sure what better options are there for trail use and the ability to pack/store the stuff in the turck and then get access when and it you need it.

looks like this is the link to the parts mentioned above.

Amazon.com: DEWALT DG5553 18-Inch Pro Contractor's Closed-top Tool Bag: Home Improvement

I just dump all the s*** out of my bag on the ground to find the right tool. Works for me! :D

I just dump all the **** out of my bag on the ground to find the right tool. Works for me! :D

well my screw ups generally happen at the wrong place....mud hole or very muddy conditions, raining, stream bed... dumping the tools on the ground just makes it worse. Sockets and small wrenchs are the worse. Not a big deal ...I'm probally going to cut down on some of the crap I carry around anyway now that I've solved most of my issues. I think the dewalt bag I mentioned is of good quality and should last a while.

Of course there have been times where if I would have had a 20lb sledghammer I would have used that to make repairs as every now and then I'll get aggrivated with the "beast"..

this it's the kind of tool box that I like .. I have all my sockets in rack and with other small stuff I put in the top section .. then going bigger in the biggger drawers ..

Elbert thanks for posting that link..
That's an even better deal...
Im planning on having a drawer system so this bag will be great to to store.

As it is I can store them under the two front seats if needed be and or on the rear quarter panels...

i have a few of these....but i am on the lookout for a decent wrench roll type...tired of the digging, but I like to stuff the fenders

Yeah... I've got a metal tool box (unsure of the brand) but its the type thats about that size or maybe a little larger...the top half splits open to allow access to the bottom and the the top half has some built in shelves for stuff. The problem is that thing gets a little heavy and is akward to pack and move around. In the end..whatever works the best. I bought some tools today from one of those clearance places and they are going into the trail toolbox and it will not be a bad day if I loose something or whatever. My good tools are going to stay at home for the most part.

I am with elbert on keeping the good tools home....but I always wonder if it is worse to have a cheap tool fail on the trail or at the house......hmmmmm

If all the tools are just tossed in the bag (thats how mine is) it does suck to find the tool you want. But it has never been that big of a deal to me. Dump out some of the larger stuff so I can dig to find what I need. I also carry a small tarp for laying on so tools can easily be tossed on that.

What I like about the tool bag is it fits many places. Mine is rather heavy loaded up so it stays where I toss it. This I like and it fits more places then a tool box. Whenever I use a tool box in the truck it ends up making a lot of noise and since I don't buy nice tool boxes it usually comes open on the trail. I just like a tool bag better.

But if you have a good box and a good way to strap it down it certainly could be better then a bag. If building a platform in the back you can built it to incorporate you tool box.

I like the rollup "things" for wrenches and stuff. If the sockets will stay on the rail then those are good too, a lot of those "socket rails" ..... come apart easy and the sockets don't fit on there tight.

Got a few of these toolrolls and small toolbags. The sockets stay like that in the drawers

I used to keep all of my sockets in one of those klein pouches that look like pencil pouces from grade school. Worked well, but I lost the whole bag..

I had one for combination wenches also but larger wrenches wont fit, over 3/4 I think.

You can buy them at homedepot in the electrical tool section.

Klein Tools -Canvas Zipper Bag

For some stocking stuffers I asked my wife for some tool bags and I sent her some links. Well she bought me the priciest one they had on the site:
Klein Tools Deluxe Leather Bags

Its the 18" one.

So before I completely destroy this stupidly nice bag with tools, any suggestions on it? Should I not even use it for tools? Or should I get more to use :flipoff2:
