Yup finally did it. The last chapter in the 2F engine swap Trilogy and Tragedy. I think Vern already had my truck fixed in his head by the time I left... If anybody can get this to work he can. Said he's been working on Toyotas since 1971! I left very impressed! Stay tuned...

Who's this "Vern" you speak of? I need to find a Toyota Mechanic to work on my FJ40 since it's not passing emissions...

Vern... Toy Specialists. Phone number on this forum just search (don't have it with me). You have to wait until mine is done, though... ;)

480-969-3320. They are on Wilbur just off Southern & Mesa. They did my HG, put on my springs & camber bushings. He is honest and does a great job.

Bring him an 18 pack 'O Coors Light & you'll have a friend for life.

Hmmm. Note to self. Thanks. :D

Vern did a great job on my HG. very straightforward and honest and a decent price.

Update:

First Vern is great. Ask him about his 4Runner... :grinpimp:

Got a DUI distributor and a set of LiveWires. Vern installed them, set the timing, runs much better EXCEPT:

The intake was warped, got that fixed and reinstalled. Vern got 2 gaskets installed for the headers.

The carb has a very serious vacuum leak. It's between the throttle body and the carb itself, not sure which is warped but there is no leak between the throttle body and the carb insulator. No way this thing is gonna run right until that is addressed. Cookie was going to Tim Hill's yesterday and see if he has a better carb.

Vern suggested I get the older carb off the F engine and we could try that. Went to Truckwerks where my old F engine and 2F block live. Pulled the carb, took it to Vern...

It's a Rochester. All I could do was laugh. See above re: Tim Hill.

Again I would highly recommend Vern. The man and his techs know Toyotas...

Now for a rant about carburetors... I sent my carb to one of the "Cruiser carb gods" who comes very well recommended and is allegedly a wizard with Aisin carbs. Got the carb back with the initial throttle body which had such badly worn throttle plate bushings that Josh (Truckwerks) could not get to run right. Contacted the "carb wizard" and he KNEW ABOUT THIS BUT DID NOTHING and was quoted to say "yeah I've never seen them worn as badly before" and would graciously sell us another one for oh, only about $150 more (after I had paid over $500 for the carb rebuild). What a joke. See my Sig line for more info on this.

Anyway hope to have the 40 ready by AZROCKS.

Later,

Marc

I was a Tim's place recently, and the old carb bin was pretty picked through...You may want to call him before you make the trek.

Yeah I'll probably have to buy a used one from Specter. I bet it won't be warped, though!

Update!

Picked up the 40 last week. Ended up putting a GM TBI system on it. Vern installed it, we had to have a talk about how I wanted some things done, and most of that was easy stuff.

The Turbo City kit comes pretty well complete, way more than the Downey kit and it's the same thing really. Rebuilt TBI throttle body, ECU, all sensors, wiring, fuel pump, etc.

Got the air cleaner from Downey.

I already had a DUI dizzy from Man A Fre. Had it modified by Turbo City as all the mechanical advance / retard hardware is removed in favor of a magnet and sensor for distributor info / timing. MAF and DUI sell a Land Cruiser dizzy already set up for fuel injection. When I bought mine I still had that awesome carb...

Install the fuel pump / filter below the engine, run a return line back from the TBI to the tank, if you have an older carb with cable fuel pedal, keep it you can use it on the TBI. Of course I had converted to the newer pushrod / crank version because of the newer carb.

Run the wiring, get the oxygen sensor bung welded in, be sure to mount the MAP sensor above the engine... turn the key!

Impressions:

First of all Vern did a pretty good job. I would go back, however... he did not fully install the air cleaner assembly on the throttle body and there was a large gap in the bottom. Only drove it a few miles like this before I noticed it (just drove it home and parked it, then started poring over the install...). Also he did not bolt down the ECU in the glovebox, just left it sitting there. I can easily mount it. Overall pretty neat and clean.

Driving it is a LOT better. Starts easily, stays running (I know this should be a given however the old setup stalled all the time). Much better power and overall driveability. I need to clean up a few things and fix the aforementioned stuff, can't wait to get it on the trail.

Now to see if it will pass emissions. It's a 71, so should be pretty easy. We'll see.
