Got some more restoration work done on my hard top. Sanded the interior down after removing the nasty headliner, and drilled out / tapped the bolt holes where some bolts had snapped over the years. Next, some minor welding on the rain gutter, then some fiberglass repairs, sand the top, and repaint / seam seal.

Got a bit more work done today on the repairs / resto of my hardtop. I borrowed a gasless welder with flux core wire from a friend: my first time using a gasless welder. More spatter, and a bit tricker to my intermediate skill level.

Nonetheless, after some practice, I was able to fix some holes and cracks on the front corners of the rain gutter. Not a lot of material there to work with, but I reattached the front portion to the rest of the rain gutter, which was my goal. Did some more sanding of the exterior of the top, wire wheeling of the old seam sealer. Another couple of hours of work in the shop, and I should be ready for some fiberglass repair, priming, and painting.

FWIW, the top had a crappy spray job on it in bright white. As I got through that coat, I found paint that matches the cygnus white I repainted my bezel in. Interior top hardware (door channels, etc) are that cygnus white, too.

Starter motor started really acting up on me today: got a solid "click" when I turned the key, but no turn over. Hitting the motor with a hammer while turning the key didn't do anything either. Jumping from the battery to the solenoid got me a little further, and pretty close to turning over. Ultimately, I took the cable off the starter, cleaned it down to fresh metal, reinstalled, and then was able to get it started with a jump after a bit. Sounds like it's time for a new starter!

Make sure you get the gear reduction style from the 60-series if you don't have it already. Great upgrade.

Was out trying to pound out a really crushed rear corner on the 40 when my 6 year old Grandson came into the shop and asked what I was doing. I explained to him what had happened. He looked at the crumpled fender and said to me, "oh yea, that's definitely going to need a repaint".
Guess he's been watching car shows at home.

Put a new gear reduction stater into my truck. Easy swap on the 2F, and now she starts like a champ! Nice upgrade.

The :princess: also wanted some shade from the sun with the top off, which means she green-lighted the purschase of a bikini top!! Love it when she lets the funds loose for the FJ-40. Got the new top installed, and took a spin through the backroads tonight. She's stoked!

Next up, new shocks on all four corners, new (used) spring in back, new spring pins and shackles, and hopefully a bit of levelling out in the saggy-rear-end stance.
